A look at Chief Kanim and Snoqualmie Middle School sports

CKMS still undefeated

The Chief Kanim Middle School varsity football team traveled to Cedarcrest High School Oct. 14 for a battle with Tolt under the lights. The Hawks didn’t disappoint as they struck early and Matt Bankston ran 22 yards for a touchdown. Bankston also scored two other touchdowns later in the game with runs of 2 and 41 yards. The Hawks totally dominated the stunned Tolt team and led 22-8 at halftime.

In the second half, others got into the act as Kaleb Huerta ran 11 yards for a touchdown, Justin Bridges intercepted a pass and ran it in for a touchdown and Ryan Herman caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from Ian Ilgenfritz. The final score was Chief Kanim 43, Tolt 8.

On defense, Ilgenfritz, Bridges, Huerta and Jacob Littlejohn led the team in tackles. This was a total team effort with the line doing an exceptional job of blocking. The Hawks can now focus their attention on Snoqualmie Middle School as both teams are 5-0 and will battle for the league championship next Wednesday night at Mount Si High School at 7 p.m.

Another shutout for SMS

The Snoqualmie Eagles JV football team continued their unblemished season by defeating the Ford Thunderbirds 27-0 at Ford Middle School.

Touchdowns were scored on a pass from T.J. Jacobs to Travis Hilleary, a run by Michael Walters and two runs by Chris Davenport. Outstanding offensive performances were made by quarterback T.J. Jacobs, end Travis Hilleary and running backs Chris Davenport and Trevor Lane.

The defense once again shutout the opponents. Stand-out defensive efforts were turned in by Sean Cantalini, Josh Mitchell and Trevor Lane. A touchdown saving tackle by Justin Mallery kept the shutout in tact and kept the momentum in the Eagles’ favor near the end of the first half.

“Mallery’s tackle is one of the best plays I have seen in 30 years of coaching,” said coach Jerry Hillburn.

The Eagles return to action next Wednesday at Orting.

Hawks blast Eatonville

The Chief Kanim Middle School varsity football team made the long trip to Eatonville Oct. 17. The Hawks received the kickoff and immediately drove down and scored as Ian Ilgenfritz took the ball in from the 3-yard line for a touchdown. Ryan Herman had a rare miss on the extra point and the Hawks led 6-0.

Eatonville scored in the second quarter on a pass play. The extra point was good and the shocked Hawks were down 7-6 at halftime. Eatonville played very tough defense and forced Chief Kanim to punt twice in the first half. The coaches challenged the players at halftime to play to their potential. The Hawks rallied in the second half and took the lead when Herman caught a touchdown pass. Herman also booted the extra point and the Hawks were back in control 14-7.

Eatonville threatened one more time in the fourth quarter when the Hawks had a turnover. The threat was stopped cold as Caleb Huerta intercepted a pass and returned it 60 yards for a touchdown. Late in the fourth quarter, Justin Bridges also intercepted a pass. Ian Ilgenfritz finished the game with a race to the pylons and scored as he held the ball out over the goal line on an outstanding run.

On defense, Justin Bridges and Ilgenfritz led in tackles, Korbin Paulson added a crucial quarterback sack and Zach Storm played very well at defensive end. On offense, Ryan Herman, Jeff Cragin and Brian Jewett all caught passes as Ilgenfritz was razor sharp with his throws.

Hawks beat Tolt

The Chief Kanim Middle School eighth-grade girls’ volleyball team defeated Tolt in three games, 21-5, 21-15 and 21-17.

Outstanding players in the contest included Shayna Beach, who scored 12 consecutive points in game one. In game two, Baylee Sinner scored eight in a row. The Hawks are 4-3 overall but have had huge improvements over the last few weeks, making them unstoppable for the rest of the season.

The seventh-grade girls were also victorious, winning two out of three matches. Maddy Schwabe severed 10 in a row in the first game, Dana Pecora got the Hawks back into game two with six dynamite serves and Celine Breton woke up in the third game with her powerful serves. Tyra Barden had several good passes and Elisse Boyle-O’Day also had several good hits.

Volleyball team downs Maywood

The Chief Kanim Middle School seventh-grade varsity volleyball team beat Maywood last week after having a rough start. The two players who got the team back into the competition were Kendra Lee and Celine Breton with some very impressive serves.

The eighth-grade team was also victorious over Maywood last week. Paige Dahlberg served 14 in a row to help the Hawks stomp Maywood 21-2 in game one. Game three had Amanda Gates serving eight in a row to finish off the match for the evening. Another outstanding player was Anna Moetului, who had nine attacks in the contest.

Eagles’ JV vanquishes Orting

In rain-soaked Orting, the Snoqualmie Eagles JV football team had to focus mainly on their ground attack and it paid off en route to a 33-0 victory over the Orting Falcons.

Chris Davenport and Trevor Lane got the tough yards inside and opened some big holes so Michael Walters could really use his speed to dominate the game. Walters scored all five of the Eagle’s touchdowns. He scored four by run and one on a pass from T.J. Jacobs.

Steady blocking by the offensive line and outstanding blocking on the outside by Eagle receivers contributed to Walters’ success.

Hawks shutout Eatonville

The Chief Kanim Middle School Hawks seventh-grade football team defeated a visiting Eatonville team 26-0. The Hawks used a swarm-tackling defense and a quick-hitting offense to open the game. Aaron Peterson rushed for 148 yards and two touchdowns while Eli Mayfield had 73 yards and two touchdowns.

Jeff Cranor’s three sacks and four tackles, Miles Zupan’s two sacks and six tackles, Ross Tassara’s six tackles and Spencer Anderson’s two interceptions combined to lead the defense to a shutout.

Eagles blast Ford

With two wins and no losses on the season, the Eagles of Snoqualmie Middle School eagerly awaited another tough contest with the undefeated Ford Thunderbirds.

After the ensuing kickoff, the Thunderbirds chipped away at the Snoqualmie defense and scored the game’s first touchdown. Missing the extra point, they kicked off to the Eagles with a 6-0 lead. The Eagles’ team captain and starting quarterback Andrew Dunklee methodically picked apart the Thunderbird defense and led the Eagles down the field. With powerful running from Rob Lane and Eric Meister, the Eagles easily answered with a touchdown of their own by Lane from 5 yards out. After another score by the Thunderbirds, the Eagles were forced to answer again.

They did just that in their traditional smash-mouth style offense with up-the-gut running by Lane and Anthony Mclaughlin. A strong drive put the Eagles within striking distance and Dunklee connected with Jordan Walthall for the Eagles’ second touchdown. Dunklee led the Eagles on another strong drive, but was cut down by the expiration of the game clock that ended the first half. With Walthall making both extra points, the Eagles’ lead at the half was 16-12.

After receiving the ball at the beginning of the second half, the Eagles quickly put up another six points, scoring easily behind the strong line blocking of Alec Deichman, Kasey Channita, Sam Vradenburg, Austen Bolves and Caymon Granillo. Mclaughlin was able to walk in from 8 yards out for the Eagles’ third touchdown. Walthall followed that up with another extra point, giving the Eagles a 24-12 lead.

Continuing in the Eagle tradition, the team maintained ground control and wore the Thunderbird defense down as they drove the field for the final touchdown of the game, made by Lane from 15 yards out.

The Eagle defense was led by the thunderous hits of linebackers Lane and Derek Welsh. With Granillo and Channita stuffing the middle threats, the fleet-footed Ford runners were forced outside, only to be unceremoniously deposited on the turf by the corner play of Meister, Shelby W
