Battle of the Birds scheduled

The annual “Battle of the Birds” varsity girls basketball game between Chief Kanim and Snoqualmie Middle Schools will be held on Jan. 24 at Mount Si High School. The seventh-grade varsity game will start at 6 p.m., followed by the eighth-grade varsity game.

This year the Chief Kanim Middle School PTSA will be putting on a half-time hoop shoot during the eighth-grade varsity game. Concessions will be available during the contests and admission prices will be $2 for adults and high school students, and $1 for Middle school students with no ASB card. The event will be free for those with an ASB card and for children under 6.

A percentage of the proceeds from admission and from the hoop shoot will be given for relief efforts of the recent tsunami tragedy.

Hawks fall to Maywood

The Chief Kanim Middle School Hawks seventh-grade girls basketball team traveled to Maywood last week, losing a tough game, 18-29. The Hawks went into halftime down by only two points but got off to a slow start in the second half and couldn’t recover. Brielle Buhner led the effort with 10 points and eight rebounds while Brie Busby contributed two points and seven rebounds. McKenzie Curly added two steals as did teammate McKenzie Will. Alyssa McClauklin added six points and six rebounds, Jesserah Helm had a steal and an assist and both Brittany Bair and Abi Peterson hustled on both ends of the court.

Lady Hawks notch win

The Chief Kanim Middle School eighth-grade girls basketball team pulled out a tremendous 52-39 win over Maywood last week with a combination of tremendous team ball and suffocating defense.

Madison Yakabowski had 33 points and 18 steals to lead the game. Nikki Stanton poured in six points and teammate Vica Falcon had six points and six rebounds. Caylene Castagno had three rebounds and Hannah Gogan added two points and five rebounds.

Wendy Hecker had a steal, Miranda Pratt had two points, McKenzie Peerboom had a rebound, Jessica Paladini had two rebounds and Cassidy Will added two rebounds.

Hawks beat Tolt

The Chief Kanim Middle School seventh-grade varsity basketball team defeated Tolt last week, 24-21. The Hawks got ahead early and never gave up the lead. Brielle Buhner led the effort with 16 points, 10 rebounds and eight steals. MacKenzie Curly had two points and three assists while teammate MacKenzie Will played a strong defense. Brie Busby had two points and eight rebounds, Alyssa McLaucklin had four points and two steals, Grace Washam had one steal, Abi Peterson had a steal, Brittany Bair had two steals, Shauna Reed had four rebounds and Jesserah Helm had two assists.

Mustangs beat Hawks

Despite 43 points, 12 rebounds and eight steals from Madison Yakabowski, the Chief Kanim Middle School eighth-grade varsity basketball team lost a tough, overtime game 50-52 against the Tolt Mustangs. Both teams worked hard as the lead continued to change hands. In the end, the ball just wouldn’t go through the hoop as the Hawks missed two game-winning shot attempts. In addition to Yakabowski’s effort, Nikki Stanton added seven rebounds and five steals, Caylene Castagno added a point and two rebounds, Vica Falcon had six points and 10 rebounds, Cassidy Will had two assists, Miranda Pratt had seven rebounds, MacKenzie Peerboom had two rebounds, Jessica Paladhini had two rebounds, Wendy Hecker had a steal and Hannah Gogan had four rebounds.

JV plays strong

The Chief Kanim Middle School seventh-grade JV girls basketball team traveled to Tolt last week, losing a close game. Devon Clemons and Giordano Alfaro both had a shot in the third quarter. Danielle Covello had 10 rebounds before a hit to the nose took her out of the game. Tessa Mathysse played an aggressive game. Adele Wolf and Alyssa Knott had some great passes. Baskets wouldn’t fall, but they all played with a lot of heart.

JV drops game to Tolt

The Chief Kanim Middle School eighth-grade JV Girls basketball team lost again to Tolt last week with a final score of 19-11. It was the most aggressive the team had played yet. All of the girls scored at least one point, adding to their final score. Coach Dean Pratt is extremely proud of the girls’ effort.

Hawks fall to Bulldogs

Alyssa McLauklin scored 11 points and 10 rebounds for the seventh-grade Chief Kanim varsity girls basketball team last week against Beaver Lake, but it wasn’t enough as the team lost, 21-35. The team also traveled to Beaver Lake, where they lost a hard fought battle against a more experienced Bulldog team, 21-35. The Hawks played there best game of the year, and actually had an 8-6 lead after the first quarter. Brielle Buher added six points, six assists and 10 rebounds. MacKenzie Curley had two points. MacKenzie Will played strong defense again. Brie Busby had two points and six steals. Shauna Reed had two rebounds as well as strong defense. Brittany Bair and Abi Peterson both played strong defense while Jessareh Helm had two steals and Grace Washam had an assist.

Eighth-grade drops Bulldogs

The Chief Kanim Middle School eighth-grade varsity girls basketball team also traveled to Beaver Lake last week and defeated the Bulldogs, 29-25. Despite getting off to a slow start, the Hawks played an aggressive and fast-paced fourth quarter to pull out to a 10 point lead and eventually hung on for the four point win. Madison Yakabowski led the effort again, scoring 25 points and recording eight steals. Nikki Stanton had three assists, three steals and seven rebounds. Caylene Castagno had four rebounds, Vica Falcon had eight rebounds, Cassidy Will had two assists, Wendy Hecker played strong defensively, Hannah Gogan had five rebounds, Miranda Pratt had five points and 10 rebounds, MacKenzie Peerboom had two steals and Jessica Paladhni had three rebounds.
