Hawks play tough against Eagles

The Chief Kanim eighth-grade boys basketball team, the

Hawks, knew it would be a battle in their game against the Snoqualmie Eagles

on March 2.

The game see-sawed as the Eagles took an early lead and the Hawks

came back to take a 14-11, first-quarter lead. Several Hawk players got in

foul trouble in the second quarter, but they battled through it and went into

halftime with a 30-24 lead.

In the second half, the Hawks led by as much as 13. Jeremy

Johnston on the inside, and Hank Kennedy and Kris Bostic on the outside, did

much of the damage.

The Eagles made a late run, but the Hawks played ball control which

preserved the victory, 58-50. Johnston led the Hawks with 21 points and 14

rebounds. Kennedy had 12 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and two crucial

steals that led to lay-ins. Bostic had 10 points and 6 rebounds. Others scorers for

the team were Mike Lindor 5, Nick Sheldon 3, Jimmy Fleming, Jay

Lewis and Brad Trombley 2 each and Corey Roe added 1.

Coach Fowler was pleased with all of his players, but was especially

impressed with the effort of Sheldon and Trombley.

Coach Fowler stated, “These guys do the things that it takes to win

the games, like playing tough defense, taking care of the ball and

making everyone around them better.”

The Hawks are now 4-0. Their next game will be at home against

Pine Lake on Thursday, March 9.

Chief Kanim

keeps Tolt at bay

The Chief Kanim eighth-grade boys basketball team traveled to

Tolt on Feb. 29. The Hawks wasted no time in taking a big lead and led 22-4 at

the end of the first quarter.

The story was pretty much the same throughout the game and

everyone enjoyed lots of playing time. The final score was Chief Kanim 67,

Tolt 32.

Jeremy Johnston scored 19 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and blocked

5 shots. Others scoring were Kris Bostic 12, Hank Kennedy 10, Mike

Lindor 7, Jimmy Fleming 6, Brad Trombley 5, Matty Secord 4, Corey Roe 3

and Jay Lewis 1. Nick Sheldon and Kennedy led the team in assists

with 4 each.

Eagles dominate Enumclaw

The mighty Eagle soccer team of Snoqualmie Middle School traveled

to Enumclaw Junior High on March 1.

The opening rally proved the Eagle offense was planning to challenge

the Enumclaw defense. The Eagles maintained possession of the ball

throughout most of the first half, delivering many shots on goal. Midway

through the first half, Kristen Berndt set up Robin Trombley to put the Eagles

on the scoreboard.

During the second half, Enumclaw fought hard to penetrate the goal

but struggled with the strong defensive efforts of the Caitlin Braun – Liana

Felt duo. Jeanie Franz, Kayla Jayne, and Ariel Waddell again held midfield

to support the tight Eagle defense and offensive drives. Berndt booted

a rocket shot to put the Eagles ahead by two.

Enumclaw answered with a toughly fought come-back goal,

but the Eagles maintained their dominant pressure to register another Eagle

victory, 2-1.

Eagles shut out Hudtloff

On Feb. 28, Snoqualmie Middle School’s Eagles challenged

another opponent from the Clover Park School District, Hudtloff Middle School.

The Eagles began the game with a dynamic kickoff and dominated

the first half of the game. Most of those 30 minutes were spent

with Snoqualmie’s forwards possessing the ball and making shots on the

goal. Mid-fielder Ariel Waddell was exceptional and balanced her game

with both crafty defensive play and scrappy offensive maneuvering.

Hudtloff’s goalkeeper and defenders were busy preventing the Eagles from scoring.

As the second half of the game began, the Eagles stripped

away Hudtloff’s kickoff and drove directly to the goal. Kristen Berndt

recorded the first Eagle goal.

Energetic midfield work by Vikki Campbell shone through the

mud-soaked day and assisted Whitney Chelgren to her first Eagle goal of

the season. Campbell punched in her own score just a few minutes later.

Continual midfield pressure kept the Eagles in the dominant position

and allowed a score from a corner kick just seconds before the end of the

game. The Eagles won their second shutout with four goals.

White Hawks take away a win

The Chief Kanim eighth-grade junior varsity White Hawks came

out firing on Feb. 28 against Tolt, and came away the upset winner.

The first quarter ended 10-6 in favor of the Hawks and the half

ended in their favor, too, 24-16. In the third quarter, Tolt continued to hang in

32-22, but behind some good shooting, passing and rebounding, the

Hawks stopped Tolt’s run and ended the game 47-36.

Scoring for the White Hawks were Eric McCammon 4, Patrick Davis

2, Zach Kramer 3, Matt Marshall 15, Brian Gross 6, Tom Schultz 2

and Andrew Conway 15. Alex VanOveren and Kevin Chaffee also saw action.

Marshall led the team in assists with three and McCammon

and Kramer each had four steals. McCammon and Conway each

had eight rebounds and Kramer had five blocked shots.

Offensive players of the game were Conway and Marshall.

Defensive players of the game were McCammon and Davis. Best off

the bench was Kramer.

“For not having practiced for a week, I thought we played fairly

well. Matt Marshall was outstanding as a playmaker setting up our

offense. Patrick Davis took their playmaker out of the game with some exceptional

defense,” said Coach Kirby after the game. “We need to sharpen our

plays and pick up our press and specialty plays before I feel comfortable. We

do have some outstanding athletes that work very hard.”
