Wildcats to hold baseball clinic

Boys and girls in the first through sixth grade and all coaches are

invited to the Mount Si High School baseball field on Saturday, March 18, from

10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a Wildcat baseball clinic. (In case of rain, bring

gym shoes. The clinic will move into the high school gym.) Instruction will

pertain to the fundamentals of hitting, pitching, fielding, catching and

base running, with Mount Si coaches and players instructing.

Cost is $20 per person. This includes a camp T-shirt and lunch.

All coaches are free.

Chesscats finish season strong

The Mount Si Chess Team finished the year impressively. Despite

fielding a team of mostly beginning players, the Chesscats finished fourth

in the Kingco Chess League and qualified for the state tournament.

At the state tournament at Issaquah High, the chess team performed

well considering their lack of experience. Freshman David Haakenson

represented the Wildcats on first board; senior Nathan Phillips on second;

junior Dan Haakenson on third; junior David Ard on fourth and

sophomore Carlin Faultersack on fifth. Freshman Cameron Rice, representing Mount

Si in the junior varsity tournament, played concurrently with the

state tournament.

The Cats endured a rough first day at the tournament, losing both of

its matches, one to Shorewood 4-1 and the other to Rogers 3-2, ending the

day with three points.

However, the Chesscats came back strong on day two, blowing the

doors off Blaine 4-1 and drawing Decatur, 2.5-2.5. They only lost one match,

4-1, to a good team from Cascade.

Overall, the Cats went 1-3-1, earning a total of 10.5 points in the

tournament. More importantly, the team finished 15 places higher than its

original seeding, surprising many people with the quality of their play.

Individually, David Haakenson had a strong tournament on first

board, winning two games while playing the best player from each opposing

team. Ard and Phillips had a strong second day, both winning two of

three matches. Dan Haakenson won two games and came very close to

winning two others, having a strong tournament on third board. In his

first-ever tournament, Faultersack earned two points on fifth board.

In the junior varsity tournament, Cameron Rice continued to show

improvement, winning one game and coming close to winning two others.

Overall, it was a great ending to a season that saw many ups and

downs. After a strong start, the team lost two standout players but recovered

nicely to again proudly represent Mount Si at both the league and state level.

Senior Nathan Phillips leaves this year; while he will be greatly

missed, the team should show great improvement next year. Congratulations on

a successful season.

Ladies’ nine hole golf begins in April

The Tall Chief Ladies Golf Club Nine Hole Division will meet

every Tuesday beginning in April through October at Tall Chief Golf

Course, 1313 West Snoqualmie River Rd., Fall City. There will be free golf clinics

and beginners are welcome.
