SMS teams finish high

It was a true team effort by both the Snoqualmie Middle School

seventh- and eighth-grade girls track teams as they ended their season on

a spectacular note at the Foothills League Finals held last week

at Issaquah High School. In a field of eight area middle schools, the

SMS eighth-grade team took third overall while the seventh-grade team

took fourth overall.

Turning in superb finishes for the eight-grade team were Kristen

Berndt taking first in both the 75-meter hurdles and long jump. She

also placed second in the 200 meter. Teammate Kelly Fletcher ran to a

second-place finish in the 400, setting a new personal record despite just

returning from the injured list. Brittanie Griep also turned in a new personal

record in the 1600, which placed her seventh overall. Other top finishers for

the eighth-grade team were Chandra Rappin with a second in the

discus, Amy Keogh with a fourth in the high jump, Katie Davidson with a

fourth in both the shot and discus, and Danielle Raver with a sixth in the

100. The 800-meter relay team of Raver, Keogh, Fletcher and Berndt

finished second.

In the seventh-grade meet, Whitney Chelgren blew away the

field in the 200, posting a school record and a first-place finish with a time of

28 seconds. Chelgren also finished first in the high jump. Teammate

Mallory Horsch took second in the 75 hurdles and fifth in the long jump.

Jeanne Frantz ran to a third-place finish in the 400 for a new personal record,

while Autum Dierking threw to a fifth-place finish in the shot. Shannon

Kelley posted a personal best fifth-place finish in the 800 and the 800 relay

team of Frantz, Meaghan Dunklee, Horsch, and Chelgren ran to a first-place

finish.

Boys do well at district meet

The SMS boys competed valiantly in the 2000 district meet, setting

many personal records and competing with heart and class. The

seventh-grade boys finished fifth overall and the

five-member eighth-grade team finished seventh.

Individual scoring for SMS went as follows: For the

seventh-grade, Adam Rothgeb took first in the 75- meter hurdles, third in the

200-meter dash and sixth in the high jump. Teammate Tom Peterson took third in

the 1600 meter and fifth in the 800 meter. Alex Grazda took third in the

discus while Brian Warren took fourth in the discus and sixth in the 400 meter.

Evan Lloyd took sixth in the 800 meter while the 400 relay team of

Lloyd, Jason King, Grazda and Rothgeb took fourth.

The medley relay of Manch Garhart, King, Rob Jepson and

Warren took fourth while the 800 meter relay of Lloyd, King, Grazda

and Garhart took third.

Scoring for the SMS eighth-grade team were Michael Keller with

a fourth in the 75-meter hurdles, Nathan Daughtrey with a fifth in the

1600 meter and sixth in the 800 meter and Jarrod Wiegardt with a fifth in the

800 meter.

The medley relay team of Cory Schwarzmiller, Keller, Bryan

Nichols and Wiegardt took sixth the turned around and took fifth in the 800 relay.
