Four Mount Si track atheletes medaled in last week’s state track meet in Pasco with all showing some impressive efforts. Three girls’ track team members and one boys’ earned medals in their events.

For the women Kristen Berndt won two medals for Mount Si. On Friday, May 30 she qualified for the finals of the 100-meter hurdles with a third-place run in a time of 16.48. On Saturday, May 31 she placed fifth in the state with a time of 16.45.

Berndt followed her hurdles effort by taking third in the state for the javelin with a throw of 126 feet, 11 inches. She becomes only the fifth girls’ track team member to win multiple medals at state for Mount Si High School.

Caitlin Braun tossed the discus 104 feet, 2 inches in the preliminaries to tie for eighth place going into the finals on Friday. Unfortunately she couldn’t improve her throw and placed ninth. Piper Sherbon had a season’s best throw of 39 feet, 4 inches in the shot to win third at state. It was the second year in a row that Sherbon has won a medal at state.

Shannon Posey had a personal best throw of 121 feet, 6 inches in the javelin to win the seventh-place medal at state.

All four girls will be back for Mount Si next year so the future of girls track looks bright.

For the boys, Tyler Austin ran a preliminary 200, placing fourth. He then went on to the finals where he ran a 23.18, good enough for seventh place and a medal.

Brian Lewis high jumped early Saturday morning easily clearing 6 feet, 2 inches. The bar was then raised to 6 feet, 4 inches and on his second attempt he rolled his ankle, walking from the event in pain. Despite the injury, he launched a third attempt but missed. He missed the medals by one place.
