SNOQUALMIE – The Mount Si High School girls’ and boys’ cross-country teams hosted Issaquah and Bellevue in a meet at their home course last Wednesday.

Using the grass surrounding the softball fields across from Mount Si and the adjoining field near Snoqualmie Elementary, the teams fought through physical discomfort and accompanying rain and wind as they meandered their way through the three-mile course.

The ground was spongy and slippery during the girls’ race as they tried to make it through three laps. It didn’t seem to affect the winner, Marie Foushee of Bellevue. She gained the lead one-half mile into the race and ran alone until she finished with a time of 19:25.

More than a minute later teammates Katie Troy and Jamie Koch nabbed the second- and fifth-place spots. Alycia Nelson and Rachel Lynn of Issaquah took third and fourth place, respectively. Mount Si’s Heidi Strom was 12th overall in a time of 23:31, but came in first for the Wildcat team.

Afterwards, Strom said she was happy with her race, but added it wasn’t her best performance.

“I did pretty good I think – at least for the weather,” she said. “I passed a couple of Issaquah girls and almost caught a Bellevue girl.”

Jessica Englund was next for the Wildcats in 17th place with a time of 25:27. Lillian Lazenby was not far behind in 21st place at 27:01, and Kit Englund finished with a time of 28:33, good for 23rd place out of 28 runners.

Without a fifth runner, Mount Si’s final score was recorded as incomplete. The Bellevue girls’ team won the race with 22 points, while Issaquah had 34 points.

In the boys race, the rainy weather let up a little bit as the sun came out from behind the clouds. Bellevue’s Josh Wilcox took first place in a time of 16:17; Jon Harding of Issaquah was second in 16:24; and Richard Franck of Bellevue was third in 16:27.

For Mount Si, Ryan Magnussen came in 15th overall with a personal-best time of 17:44. Teammate Bryce Kaestner was 19th overall, also running a personal record.

“I was going for my PR today – I think it’s 18:27 and I broke it in 17:58, Kaestner said. “I’m feeling good about that.”

Josh Magnussen was 23rd at 18:23, and Tom Peterson was 25th at 18:39. Craig Fanger followed Peterson in 26th place with a time of 18:42, and Colin Parsons rounded out the quintet with a time of 18:44 for 28th place.

Final scores for the boys’ teams were Issaquah with 24 points, Bellevue with 33 points and Mount Si with 85 points.
