‘Cats take tournament

The Mount Si Wildcat wrestling team hosted the 1999 David Szczepanik takedown tournament this last weekend and dominated both 3A and 4A teams.

David Szczepanik takedown tournament this last weekend and dominated both

3A and 4A teams. Squads from seven schools participated with

wrestlers from other schools, such as Cedarcrest, filling the rosters out

for teams that didn’t have all the weight classes filled.

Mount Si scored an unbelievable 356 points in the meet, 80 points

more than second place Redmond, which recorded 276 points. In third

was Washington with 246 points, followed by Kennedy with 234 and Hazen

in fifth with 198 points. Sixth place went to Interlake with 118 points.

Individually, Mount Si showed tremendous depth in many of the

weight classes. Besides the Upper Valley wrestling squad’s outstanding

performance, several Cedarcrest wrestlers took their respective weight classes.

In the 103-pound class Aaron Pedeferri, a freshman, took first

place with 56 points. Jordan Prior, also a freshman, took second with 16

points. In the 112-pound class, Mount Si’s Andrew Ahmadi took second with

56 points behind Kennedy’s Gabe Narvaez with 62. Cedarcrest

freshman Darren DeBoer took third with 36 points.

In the 119-pound class, Red Wolves’ senior Eric Pedeferri took

first place with 110 points, a new tournament record. Mount Si’s Jason

Moe took third with 36 points. Wildcat Chad Mills took first in the

125-pound class with 58 points while Alan Schults of Cedarcrest took

seventh with two points.

State placer Ben Veyna took first in the 130-pound class with 78

points while teammate Blake Moore took third in the 135-pound class with

30 points.

Veteran Wildcat wrestler Hiram Tame took first in the 140-pound

class with 52 points. In the 145-pound class Payton Thompson took fourth

with eight points. In the 152-pound class, Ryan Smith took second with

28 points, while teammate Jed McDaniels took fifth in the 160-pound class

with four points.

In the 171-pound class, the Wildcats’ Bobby Taylor took sixth with

six points. The 189-pound class had a few last minute changes as leaders

Pat McNaghten from Blanchet and Brad Davis from Mount Si were

disqualified during their mutual match.

Mount Si senior Brandon Prior took third in the 215-pound class

while Cedarcrest veteran Cole Birk took fifth. And finally, in the

275-pound class, the big man, Sean Sexton, took first with 52 points while

Cedarcrest’s Bela Hill took sixth with 14 points.
