A look at Valley athletes and athletics.

Mount Si grad vaults to sixth

Jared Drake, a 1999 Mount Si graduate and freshman at

UCLA, earned a sixth-place finish in the pole vault at the Pac 10 Track and

Field Championships held at the University of Oregon recently.

Drake jumped 16-10 in a tough competition that included

qualifying vaulters from all of the Pac 10

schools. The five vaulters that placed higher than Drake were all college seniors.

While at Mount Si, Drake was an honors student and a standout in

golf and track and field. His 16-foot vault as a senior broke the Mount Si

record by more than a foot. As a freshman at UCLA, Drake was on the Dean’s

List for academics and earned a Bruin varsity letter by placing and

scoring points in numerous meets. The highlight of his season was qualifying

for and then placing in the Pac 10 Championships.

Wildcats head to World Series

The Snoqualmie Wildcats 13-year-old baseball team has qualified for

the USSSA World Series to be held in Tulsa, Okla. from July 16 through

23. In a qualifying tournament at Oliver, British Columbia, the Wildcats

advanced to the championship round against the Dream Team from

Victoria. The Dream Team was the Canadian representative to the Little

League World Series in Williamsport, Pa., in 1999.

The Wildcats’ injury-riddled pitching staff rode the arm of

lefthander Adam Dentz. Dentz started with a two-hit shutout against Anvil, British

Columbia, striking out 19 of the 21 batters faced. He returned a game

later stopping the powerful Kirkland Heat then went on to pitch in relief

against the Victoria Dream Team. Dentz had 40 strikeouts in 20 innings of

pitching.

Offensive spark was provided by Joe Orrico, Bryce Andrews,

Zach Bowen and Brandon Sales. Outfielder Bowen and catcher Sales

provided defensive gems through the tournament. Andrews played the entire

tournament with a broken bone in his foot.

Besides completing Sandy Koufax league play, the team will be

conducting a fund raiser to help defray the costs of the upcoming

tournament. Anyone interested in assisting the team can pledge their donation to

the Snoqualmie Wildcats Baseball Club at (425) 888-3134.
