A look at Valley athletics and athletes

Rainiers silence A’s

The Sno-Valley Rainiers, behind a strong pitching performance by

Alex VanOeveren, silenced the Mount Lake Terrace A’s to post their third win

of the season 5-1. Allowing only four hits and one run over seven

innings, VanOeveren over-powered the A’s hitters in pitching a complete game.

“He seemed to get stronger inning after inning, had great control and

really stayed focused,” replied coach Al Landdeck. “At the same time, he

kept his pitch count low, allowing him to get the complete game.”

“Our pitchers have really improved and are getting better and

better as the season progresses,” remarked manager Warren

Sheldon. “They have all done a great job at keeping their heads in the game

even after some early season defensive troubles.”

The Sno-Valley team finally put together a good game in all areas

and was never really threatened in the game. Smart hitting and

aggressive base-running were the difference, as the Rainiers pounded out 10

strong hits. It was a complete team effort in posting the win as the Rainiers

improved their record in the Pony League to 3-5 overall.

Valley Baseball goes the distance

Valley Baseball split their games in the last few weeks, 50-50 going

3-for-3 in league play. After their game with Issaquah being called due

to darkness, Valley Baseball traveled to Burlington to take on Mount

Vernon. Leading 2-0 going into the fifth inning, it looked like the game was in the

bag for the local team. But Mount Vernon rallied for seven runs to take the

lead. Valley Baseball worked hard to tie the game but time ran out giving the

team a loss of 7-6.

Then, on April 29, the team took on the Horrocks Brewers

at MacDonald Park in Carnation. Cody Vermeulen pitched a gem of a

game striking out 14 batters and going the entire 6.5 innings, icing the 3-1

score and giving the local boys the win.

After the home win, the team was on the road for three

consecutive games. Their first two road games were losses, one to Mountlake

Terrace, 5-3, and the other to Issaquah Chevy Titans, 6-2. But the team avenged

their losses in game three against the Bellevue Braves, winning 2-0.

“We had great pitching and excellent defense,” said manager

Matt Sanelli. “The team played as a team.”
