Does this rumble sound like injustice?

Letter to the Editor.

I live in a nice quiet community, or it was quiet when I purchased

my condo in North Bend. But there are a dozen or so family dwellings in

my neighborhood as well as the new North Bend U.S. Post Office. At 3:30

a.m. every morning except Sunday, our neighborhood is awakened by

the rumble of a diesel truck, a back-up beeper, then a noise that has been

compared to artillery fire. This is what happens when the mail is delivered

to North Bend. It also happens at least two more times before 8 a.m.

I have complained about the noise to two different post office

managers and their bosses, solicited and begged support from community leaders

and various agencies _ and the noise still continues. Upon reporting the noise

to the police, my neighbor was told to keep a record by calling 911 for a

non-emergency every time she heard the noises. What good did it do? None.

The post office recently went to the expense and effort to have a

consultant measure the sounds emanating from the delivery system, and

they reported noise extremely above the levels suggested by city and

county code. And still, nothing has been done to stop the disturbance. They claim

to have made improvements, but nothing has quieted the noise.

Personally, I am affronted because I have had to move into my guest

bedroom in an effort to get a good night’s sleep (as have several of my

neighbors), but we still hear the commotion. In addition, I feel like the value of

my property has dropped considerably, although not wanting to sell, the

personal value of not being able to utilize my property to its fullest is

deteriorating.

I don’t understand the logistics of not upholding our established

noise ordinances, but no one seems willing to enforce them. I feel my civil

rights have been violated, and ask for support from the community to help

solve this problem.
