Washington appointed as newest member of Snoqualmie City Council

Louis Washington fills vacancy left by former councilmember Matt Laase

The Snoqualmie City Council appointed Louis Washington to be its newest member on Tuesday night. He fills a vacancy left by Matt Laase, who resigned in January.

Washington was one of six applicants to apply for the vacant seat and was selected after an interview. His term will last until the end of the calendar year.

“I am prepared to devote my time and energy to serving on the council and will endeavor to help Snoqualmie prosper,” Washington wrote in his application letter.

Over the last year, Washington has served on the city’s Economic Development Commission and chaired the Snoqualmie Valley Housing Task Force Community and Public Policy Committee. In those roles, he has worked on city marketing campaigns, water rights regulations and zoning laws for affordable housing.

In an interview, Washington said he jumped into those positions to learn more about the city and its broader issues, noting his EDC role led him to apply for the council seat.

“I have a business background, so I thought the EDC would be a good place to start,” he said. “That led to me seeing all the wonderful things that are happening in the city and I wanted to be a part of the conversation.”

Washington said his priorities will focus on supporting local businesses, preserving a sense of community and ensuring a sustainable environment for all residents.

Washington has worked as a strategic business manager for Smiths Medical, a medical equipment manufacturing company, for the last 12 years. He holds an undergraduate degree in political science and economics from Western Washington University and an MBA from Seattle University.

A Renton High School alum, Washington moved to Snoqualmie five years ago.

“I really love our community,” he said. “We have a great community with so many great people and great leaders. I’m so proud to be a part of it.”

Washington will take his oath of office at the April 10 city council meeting.
