Snoqualmie housecleans liquor laws, steepens penalty for furnishing to minors

The Snoqualmie City Council this month amended city liquor laws, upping the fines and penalties for furnishing alcohol to minors.

Police Captain Steve McCulley described the change as a housecleaning matter, bringing city law in line with state rules.

Before the change, a person caught giving liquor to minors in Snoqualmie faced a misdemeanor charge, carrying a $100 fine or 30 days in jail. Now, the offense is a gross misdemeanor, carrying a $1,000 penalty or 90 days in jail.

With prom and graduation season near, the change comes as police work to prevent substance abuse and attendant dangers.

Some adults are under the impression that they can legally give alcohol to minors in their own home. McCulley said that’s not true, even for their own children.
