Last week, the North Bend Masonic Lodge presented bicycles and helmets to two students at Opstad Elementary who won the school’s reading contest.

Ana Hulverstott, fourth grade, and Andy Jacobsen, second grade, were chosen in the Bikes for Books competition. This is the first of five donations the Masons will make at local schools.

North Bend Masons sponsor the Bikes for Books program with Singletrack Cycles of North Bend to encourage students to read.

Students in the program are encouraged to read age-appropriate books. Each school chooses two readers to receive a bike and safety helmet.

The goal of the program is to establish a love for reading early in life.

Opstad Elementary is named for Edwin R. Opstad, an early member of the North Bend Lodge, superintendent of the Fall City School District, and the first superintendent of the Snoqualmie Valley School District formed in 1944.
