Snoqualmie’s Sustainability Speakers Forums in Snoqualmie are drawing full houses.

Exploring topics on planning a green community future, the forums happen each month through June. Upcoming sessions will cover everything from energy, water, and green home design to community health, wrapping up with a workshop for participants to share ideas about community planning issues and opportunities.

“It really is an incredible opportunity,” said Snoqualmie Planning Director Nancy Tucker. “We have speakers who usually talk at universities and organizations around the world. With their visits to Snoqualmie, we can hear how these global issues relate to Snoqualmie — to our kids and to us.”

The next session, “Traveling Back to the Future: Urban form and transportation,” is 7 p.m. Monday, April 19, at City Hall. There will be a table with coloring books set up for children; light refreshments are available.

Speakers have already addressed how parks, open spaces and our food choices affect the levels of health and happiness of both youth and adults. Tips are provided about how to care for nature, save money, and get exercise. One recent session revealed how much gardening would be required to burn off half of a Big Mac with cheese, which earned a chuckle from the crowd (the answer was an hour).

“Snoqualmie has the same concerns as other places,” said Trapper Bailey, chairman of Snoqualmie’s planning commission. “How a city develops influences how much people want to walk and bike, and the choices people make around the home with energy and water. These decisions directly impact obesity levels, consumption patterns and people’s quality of life. They impact all of us.”
