Amy Montanye-Johnson, a counselor in the Everett School District, has been selected for the position of principal of Two Rivers School. She was chosen from a field of 30 applicants, narrowed to three finalists who all spent full days in the Snoqualmie Valley School District meeting students, staff, parents and district administrators.

Montanye-Johnson has been at Sequoia High School in Everett for 11 years. This alternative education school has a larger enrollment than Two Rivers, about 300 students compared to 130-150 at Two Rivers.

“Alternative education serves a lot of students,” said Montayne-Johnson.

Outgoing Principal Tom Athanases, who knew Montayne-Johnson from the Washington Association for Learning Alternatives (WALA) said she was “good people,” and Two Rivers teacher Jack Webber, speaking for the school staff, told the school board “we are… absolutely excstatic with the selection of Amy as our new principal.”

She earned her P-12 Principal Certification from Western Washington University in 2005, her Master’s degree in Education from Seattle University in 1999, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Whitman College in 1993.

“Amy is an impressive candidate who is held in the highest regard by the students and staff at Sequoia High School,” said Snoqualmie Valley Superintendent Joel Aune. “While she has not had actual experience as a school principal, she assumed many administrative-like responsibilities in her 11 years as a counselor at Sequoia.  Amy has been working under a principal who is an excellent role model, and in a school that has made some significant change and improvements in recent years.”

The school board will approve her appointment at its June 23 meeting, and Montayne-Johnson will start with the district on July 1.
