• Formal documents on the “Snoqualmie Ridge” project were released last week, a year and a half after the Weyerhauser Real Estate Co. announced its plans to build what easily looks like a new city on the plateau between Snoqualmie Falls and Fall City.

• A major section of the Snoqualmie River is classified as an “impaired water body” in a new report on pollution by the state Department of Ecology. The inventory of 135 impaired river segments includes a 19.5 mile stretch of the main stem Snoqualmie, from the junction with the Tolt River at Carnation to the junction with the South Fork Snoqualmie east of Snoqualmie, as well as a two-mile section of Patterson Creek.

• Fire of undetermined origin caused heavy damage to stock and supplies at the Hearing Drug Store in North Bend the evening of May 23. Although the amount of damage is not yet known, virtually the entire contents of the back store room were a total loss. Mr. and Mrs. Hearing and a customer, Mrs. hazel Pickett, were in the front of the store at about 7:30 p.m. when Mr. Hearing happened to glance back to the rear of the store and noticed a flame. While his wife called the fire department, Mr. Hearing grabbed a fire extinguisher and also turned on the water tap.

• Chief Melvin A. Wicks of the North Bend Police Department escaped injury in an accident which culminated a lengthy pursuit of another vehicle at 4:30 a.m., May 22. Chief Wicks said he pursued Harley H. Stoner of North Bend, driving east on PSH No. 2 at excessive speeds and followed the Stoner vehicle when it turned into the Lake Keechelus Dam Road. During the chase, Wicks said the Stoner car sideswiped his care several times, running him into the ditch at one point. Reaching the end of the dead-end road, Stoner turned his car around and rammed the police vehicle head-on.
