Jake Huber, a soon-to-be senior at Mount Si High School, hefts a huge X of plywood onto a worktable.

It’s a work in progress now, but one day soon that rough plywood sheet will be covered in colorful paintings, intricate crafts and views of the Valley.

Huber and his classmates were wrapping up construction of the wooden displays for the arts and crafts at this summer’s Festival of the Arts at the centennial Festival at Mount Si in North Bend.

Like similar projects put together by Mount Si’s Career and Technical Education program, the display project was a student affair.

Huber submitted a bid and completed a contract to make the stands for the arts festival committee. He led the project, and handled challenges in assembly to make sure the displays are up to par.

CTE instructor Greg Meyers encourages students like Huber to connect to the broader community.

“The community sees what is going on here in our classes at Mount Si” when students get involved, he said.

“We can’t speak highly enough of Jake,” said Festival organizer Sallie Burhans. “He looked at the plans, built to the specifications, and added some innovations that we thought would help. His workmanship was outstanding.”
