SMS girls conclude track season
The Snoqualmie Middle School Lady Eagles concluded their season Tuesday, June 7, at Issaquah High School with the Foothill’s league meet.
The eighth-grade team saw impressive finishes by Leah Wiley, who threw 88 feet, 10.75 inches to capture first in the discus, and Danielle Crabtree, who finished third overall in the 400 with a time of 66.0. Shelby Westerlund ran to fourth in the hurdles with a 13.5, and Wiley picked up a sixth-place finish in the shot with a put of 25 feet even. The 800 relay team of Kristina Johnson, Crabtree, Wiley and Westerlund finished fifth and the medley relay team of Johnson, Christina Carlson, Crabtree and Conway finished sixth overall.
In the seventh-grade meet, Summer Nash led the team by placing in all four of her individual events. She leapt to a second in the long and high jumps placing her in the number one position on the all-time top-10 list in the long jump for her leap of 15 feet, 2 inches. She also took third in the hurdles and fourth in the 200. Teammate Geena Bumgardner ran a record time for herself in the 800 placing second with a 2:39.3. Taking fourths for the team were Emily Beekman in the discus, and Shelagh Macaulay in the high jump with a leap of 4 feet, 6 inches.
Allie Van Bryce placed fifth in the 100, as did Kasea Harbachuk in the 400. Taking the lone individual sixth for the Eagles was Abbie Grimstad in the discus. The 400-meter relay team of Lauren Snead, Marika Loudenback, Macaulay and Lindberg took fourth in a time of 58.4, as did the 800-meter relay team of Lindberg, Bumgardner, Snead and Van Bryce. The medley team of Snead, Van Bryce, Lindberg and Wheeler placed fifth.
CKMS marks end of track season
The Chief Kanim Middle School eighth-grade boys and girls track teams showed up at Issaquah High School ready to compete recently. It was a perfect day to run, a little cool and overcast. In the first event, the eighth-grade boys hurdles, Jeff Adams was first out of the blocks and never looked back. He took first place with a 12.1-second new school record.
Eighth-grader Diana Keller, who has not been defeated this year, took the hurdles with a 12.4-second first-place finish. Keller continued to excel with a third-place long jump of 15 feet, 4 inches and another school record in the high jump with a 5-feet first-place jump. She finished the meet earning 34 points. Stephanie Burk rose to the occasion high jumping 4-foot, 8-inches for second place and added a second place for the 200-meter dash. Even though she finished second at 27.6 seconds, it was a new school record.
The eighth-grade girls’ 400-meter relay flew to a new school record with a 54-second finish. Members of the team were Madison Yakaboski, Bethany Frieler, Burk and Keller. Joey Evans lead the boys with three first-place finishes and one second. The boy’s finished the Foothill Finals in third place and the girls fourth place.
Aaron Moetului led the seventh-grade boys team with the only first place, which was in the discus with a throw of 122-feet, 11-inches, a new school record. Delcy Whited also took first place in the shot put with a throw of 78-feet, 10-inches. Brad Reaves followed with a third place for his throw of 86-feet, 9-inches. Tessa Matthyssee threw 25-feet, 3-inches for a first-place shot put and Vince Vasquez pumped out a 32-foot, 4-inch throw in the shot put for third place. Finally, in the 800 relay, Chris Hindmarch, Taylor Fish, Evan Ellington and Collin Okerland broke the previous record at 1:56.4 for second place.
Last but not least came the “attack of the clones,” also known as the Robbins twins. One is a sprinter and one a distance runner. Taylor Robbins led the 400-meter relay to a third-place finish along with Kayla Wargi, Adelei Wolf and sister Marley Robbins. Marley started her events with a second-place, 1,600 meter run of 5:42.6, a new school record. She then came back to wipe out the field in the 800-meter run at 2:36.9, another new school record and first place. The seventh-grade boys finished the meet in fourth place, and the girls in fifth place.
The sixth graders didn’t compete in the finals, but the athletes had a good season. A highlight was the strength of Carrie Miller, who finished first in every event in which she competed. Miller also created a new school record in the 75-meter hurdles with a time of :13.7.
The 2005 season was the first time Chief Kanim hovered at around 100 athletes. Great assistant coaches Tony Schlotfeldt, Syd Sherrid and Lindsay Ratcliffe were awesome additions to the Chief Kanim Middle School coaching staff. By season’s end, 20 of the school’s 97 athletes set new school records. The eighth-grade boys finished 2-2, eighth-grade girls 3-1, seventh-grade boys 2-2, seventh-grade girls 2-2, sixth-grade boys 1-2 and sixth-grade girls 1-2.
