The future of State Route 202

SNOQUALMIE – When Jerry Main sits in his chair facing Railroad Avenue in Snoqualmie to smoke the occasional cigarette, he has a pretty good view of the coming traffic problem.

As owner of the Main Barber Shop on Railroad Avenue – known to the greater part of Washington as State Route 202 – Main has seen more and more cars coming in and out of town.

“It seems to get worse every month,” he said.

With mounting traffic numbers looming, local and state planners began the SR 202 Corridor Improvement Study last year. The study, funded by the Washington State Department of Transportation, is looking at ways to jump ahead of what is expected to be a surge in Snoqualmie’s population and, consequently, its traffic. Although traffic in Snoqualmie may seem light compared to what Issaquah deals with every day, local and state planners have been busy preparing the city for double its present population in 10 years.
