With rifle volleys, words and wreaths, Valley residents honored veterans who died in the service of their country.

“Because of them our lives are free. Because of them our nation lives,” said Steven Fenton, commander of the Renton-Pickering Post 79 of the American Legion in Snoqualmie.

The Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Mount Si Post 9476, with help from the women’s auxiliaries and area Scouts traveled to cemeteries in Preston, Fall City and North Bend and to Mount Si High School to honor the Valley’s military dead on Memorial Day.

The Legion post is named after Valley World War I veterans David Renton and Lester Pickering, who died in that war.
