Saving rabbits

Published 9:47 am Thursday, October 2, 2008

Atop Stillwater Hill just north of Carnation live 45 rescued rabbits. Some have been injured, some abused, some abandoned and all are in need of adoption by committed and loving families. Angie Green is fostering them for Rabbit Haven, a charitable, nonprofit organization founded in 1986 and located in Gig Harbor.

Many readers will have read and remembered John Steinbeck’s novel “Of Mice and Men.” In the story George and his partner Lennie, who is mentally challenged, are itinerant California workers, moving from ranch to ranch to earn their keep. What keeps them going is their dream of someday owning their own place – a place where they will be accountable to no one and where Lennie will raise rabbits. But fate is unkind, and Lennie is killed before the dream is realized.
