FALL CITY – Last week, teacher Deona Kim put the finishing touches on her room at Fall City Elementary School.
Kim mixed some paint and then cut the rough edges off worksheets for her kindergarten class. Two class birds, Larry and Lilly, chirped away as she worked.
Right as she finished up, her first students started to arrive. Kim greeted them by their first name and asked them to find their cubby. The students eagerly obliged and placed their backpacks, which appeared to be about as big as them, into their respective storage spots. Kim then asked them to pick out a book from some colored bins near the front of the room and find their desk. The students chose books and looked for their name on desks that were grouped together throughout the room. Once their seats were found, the youngsters sat down and looked intently at their reading material. Most didn’t say one word.
