Basketball team finalizing plans
The Mount Si Wildcats boys’ basketball program has a busy summer ahead.
On June 18, the Wildcats are sponsoring a 3-on-3 basketball tournament at Fall City Elementary to be held in conjunction with Fall City Days. That is not the only tournament Mount Si will be participating in. Beginning June 7 and lasting all the way to July 10, the varsity, JV and C teams will be participating in various competitions in the Western Washington area. The varsity squad will be playing in the Seattle University summer league, the AND1 tournament in Seattle and the Another Level tournament in Stanwood. The JV and C teams will be competing a little closer to home in the Skyline summer league.
The boys’ basketball program will be holding a camp for boys basketball players who will be in third-through eighth-grade during the upcoming 2005-2006 school year. The camp, to be held July 18 through 22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Snoqualmie Middle School gymnasium, 9200 Railroad Ave S.E., will provide players with many hours of skill development and game action with instruction provided to campers by Mount Si coaches and players.
Cost for the camp is $75- $80. There is a $10 discount per additional camper for families that register more than one participant. All campers will receive a T-shirt, but for the higher fee campers will receive an official camp basketball as well. The deadline to register is July 1. After that, the fees will go up $10 for both levels. For information, call Mount Si head boys basketball coach Garrick Phillips at (425)831-8100 or e-mail him at phillipsg@snoqulamie.k12.wa.us.
Mount Si will also be hosting its annual golf tournament on Aug. 12 at Mount Si Golf Course. This is the fifth year the program has hosted this event, which raises money for the Wildcats program. The format this year will be a four-person scramble with a shotgun start. Prizes will be awarded for lowest scores and top tallies in other events. For information about participation, sponsoring holes, or donating prizes, contact Phillips at the number or e-mail address listed above.
White headed to California
The Wildcats made news off the field last week: softball outfielder Emily White, daughter of Mount Si coach Larry White, has decided on her college plans. Emily has accepted a scholarship to play volleyball this fall at Bethany College, a college run by the Assembly of God Church located in Scotts Valley, Calif., just south of San Jose.
The team she will be joining, known as the Bruins, appears to be a veteran group. An analysis of the 2004 roster posted on the school’s Web site showed that following last season there was only one graduating senior. Barring transfers or other changes to the remaining players, only two are expected to be seniors in 2005. Four will be juniors. One of those seniors happens to be a libero, which was the position White played at Mount Si, so chances are she will be getting a lot of playing time.
Haakenson earns All-America honors
Pacific Lutheran University’s Dan Haakenson ended his collegiate track career on a positive note last week, earning All-America honors with a seventh-place finish in the men’s hammer throw at the NCAA Division III National Track and Field Championships in Iowa. Haakenson is a 2001 graduate of Mount Si High School.
Haakenson of Carnation, who graduated from PLU last Sunday, recorded a throw of 180-4 (54.98 meters) on his final attempt in the preliminaries. The mark qualified him for the final and held up for his seventh-place finish.
The top eight placers in each event receive All-America honors. Haakenson is the first men’s outdoor track and field All-American for PLU since 2002.
Local rower to compete
Mount Si senior Amy Brevick will compete in the National Rowing Regatta. Brevick will compete in the number-two seat on a quad boat. She competes for the Sammamish Rowing Association.
Students compete in volleyball series
This summer’s 20th annual East vs. West All State volleyball series is the longest running high-school all-star event held for graduating senior volleyball athletes in the state of Washington. Participants from the Snoqualmie Valley are Marissa Hill from Mount Si High School and Shannon Rohr from Cedarcrest High School.
To be eligible, athletes must be senior, first team all-league selections. Applications are sent out to first team athletes in January (210 applicants sent this year). A group of coaches (any high-school head coach may be involved) from all divisions (A, B, 2A, 3A, 4A) meets after the deadline to tabulate results from the criteria that has been previously established to select the teams. There are six teams and two to three alternates to each team are also selected, along with 12 coaches.
Matches this year will be held at Fife High School on July 14; Selah High School on July 15; and Mead High School on July 16. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students and children under age 12 are admitted free of charge.
