On Sept. 10, Cedarcrest High School’s cross country squad competed at the Tahoma Relays, a co-ed relay of five-member teams. The 3-kilometer course crosses a pond, and so do the runners, which makes the meet unusual, and fun for the athletes.

No official results are taken at the meet, but in unofficial stats, “The A-Team” team from Cedarcrest finished in the top 10, a first since 2013, says head coach Bruce McDowell. Finishing sixth overall, the team included Grant Van Valkenburg, Ian Fay, Ben Benson, Alicia Krivanek and Madi Shinn.

Athletes of the meet were Ryan LaTurner, Bennett Smith, Katelyn Wells and Helen Lutzenhiser.

Unofficial times for the boys were: Ben B., 11:13; Grant V., 11:14; Ian F., 11:31; Emmett K., 11:59; Justin Y., 12:06, Ryan L., 12:14; Daniel M., 12:20; Brennan L., 12:22; Austin W., 12:46; Patrick M., 13:11; Jackson F., 13:19 ; Brady S., 13:20; Jake W., 16:29; Kaden O., 13:49; Ben N., 14:17; Bennett S., 14:18; Connor E., 14:18; Alex P., 14:26; Dawson C., 14:28; Hunter R., 14:29; Andrew C., 14:31; Calvin N., 14:52; Brodie R., 15:39; Cole C., 15:47; and Husein S., 15:49.

Girls times were: Madi S., 13:49; Lily K., 13:58; Alicia K., 14:06; Megan R., 14:24; MaryCate B., 14:48; Kate V., 14:50; Elsie D., 15:23; Cecelia K., 15:56; Katelyn W., 15:56; Kelly H., 16:06; Ginger V., 16:39; Anna P., 16:45; Jenna Y., 18:57; Helen L., 19:32; and Lexie N., 19:57

On Sept. 7, the squad competed at its first meet of the season, commonly called the Conference Preview.

The girls team, running the 3K (1.86 miles) course first, claimed first place as a team and Madi Shinn was the individual winner of the race. Five girls finished in the top 10, including Alicia Krivanek, third, Lily Krueger fourth, Kate Vergillo eighth and Mary Cate Babcock ninth. Nine girls placed in the top 20.

The boys repeated the girls’ performance in their race, taking first place as a team. Grant Van Valkenburg was the individual winner.

Also, said coach McDowell, “Our whole top seven finished in the top 11 of the race. Considering there were six other schools there, that is a strong performance.”
