Former ‘Cats earn post-season honors

It was a great spring for two ex-Mount Si softball players playing ball at Pierce Community College in Tacoma.

Sophomores Kayla Jayne and Ashley Svarthumle both played key roles on a Raider team that won their division title in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges for the first time in a quarter century, and in doing so set school records for league (26) and overall (36) wins. Their season ended with two losses in the conference tournament in Portland, one to an Oregon school, the other to Spokane.

Jayne, who will be playing for Central Washington University next season, hit .468 with 24 doubles, six home runs and 44 runs batted in for a team that went 26-4 in league, 36-15 overall. She set a school record for most career hits with 144. Svarthumle, who over the winter signed with Northern State University in South Dakota, hit .371 with 11 home runs and 39 runs batted in.

Both players’ strong seasons offensively earned them first-team honors in the NWAACC Western Region, and Jayne also earned Most Valuable Player honors from both the league and the team for her efforts. The league honors were voted on by coaches.
