urner leads effort for Lutes

SALEM, Ore. – Pacific Lutheran and Willamette were picked in the pre-season coaches poll to finish first and second, respectively, in the Northwest Conference volleyball standings – by a difference of just three points.

Last week’s match between the two teams was just as close, with Willamette winning 3-2. The Lutes are now 1-1 in conference matches, 2-6 overall.

Willamette improved to 2-0 in the conference, 8-2 on the season.

The Lutes rallied from a 28-30 loss in the first game with 30-23 and 30-27 victories for a 2-1 lead over the Bearcats. Willamette claimed a 30-26 win to force the fifth game, then outlasted the Lutes 20-18 to capture the match.

Stephanie Turner, a 2002 Mount Si graduate, paced the Lutes’ attack with 21 kills. Lina Peloli tallied 15 kills and Kati McGinn had 12. Gina DiMaggio recorded 50 assists. Megan Kosel led in digs with 27.
