Eagles lose battle

The Snoqualmie Eagles varsity football team battled the Hawks from Chief Kanim in their annual night game held last week under the bright lights at Mount Si stadium. The Hawks prevailed 14-6 in a game that stretched to the final seconds of play. Both teams displayed tremendous courage and desire as the two teams locked horns for four quarters.

Despite the rain pelting down, the resilient new field turf provided ample footing for the horsemen up front, Ahmad Korma, Chris Anderson, Alec Deichman, Jordan Walthall and Cameron Hilsman, to open holes for running backs Donny Hendrickson, Rob Lane, Robby Knecht and Code Blair. Quarterback Andrew Dunklee led the Eagles on several strong drives.

Early in the second quarter, strong running from all four backs forced the Hawk’s defense to close, allowing a 30-yard pass down the middle from Dunklee to Cody Lane. Two plays later, Lane slanted in and caught Dunklee’s pass for a touchdown for the first score of the game. A blocked extra point by the Hawks made the Eagles lead 6-0. The defense was led by the line-backing duo of Hendrickson and Lane, who put some tremendous hits on the hard runningbacks from Kanim. Lars Swenson knifed in from his nose tackle position to disrupt the Hawk’s backfield.

Both Blair brothers displayed nifty defensive back skills, with Code intercepting a pass and stopping one Hawk drive, while brother Chaz, who had his hands on an interception that was nullified, also helped contain the outside flat. Both teams brought their traditional emotion and physical play, which provided many heroic efforts from the players.

The Hawks, behind the impressive runs of Tanner Riley, came back to score two touchdowns to lead 14-6 with time running out. Behind the strong running of Robby Knecht, who scrambled and fought his way for 10-15 yard gains, the Eagles were able to mount one last charge to the Hawk’s 25-yard line, only to see the ball, and game slip away on the last play

The coaches said they are very proud of the team’s effort, as they seemed to save their best game for last. The team also handed out their end of season awards at their banquet. Donny Hendrickson was awarded Mr. Offense. Rob Lane won Mr. Defense, and Chris Anderson won Most Improved.

Cody Lane won Most Inspirational and Tres Redemann received the Coaches Award.
