The Chief Kanim Hawks varsity football team hosted Tolt last week recording its first win of the season, 14-8.

Tolt took the opening kickoff and drove down the field. The Hawks finally were able to stop the drive and took over on offense. Unfortunately, Chief Kanim was intercepted and again Tolt started marching on the Hawks’ defense. This time Tolt was not to be denied and scored a touchdown and the extra point and led 8-0.

The stunned Hawks kept their heads as Tyson Riley hit Zach Kirschmeyer with a pass and rambled for 27 yards down to the 1-yard line. Riley took the ball in on a quarterback sneak and the Hawks were back in the game. The extra point failed and Tolt still led 8-6 as the half ended.

Chief Kanim received the second-half kickoff and marched down the field. Runs by Joey Evans and Kirschmeyer stymied the Tolt defense. Evans scored on a run off tackle and the Hawks were back in business. R.W. Johnston booted the extra point and Kanim found itself leading 14-8.

The Hawks’ defense shut down another Tolt drive to allow the offense back on the field. Riley orchestrated a drive that moved the ball down inside the 10-yard line, but a penalty shot the Hawks down again. As Tolt took over on downs, the game was winding down. The defense held its ground giving the ball back to the Hawks and allowing them to run out the clock.

The duo of Evans and Kirschmeyer combined for 135 rushing yards. Riley also added 50 yards through the air. The defense was lead by Zack Brevik with eight tackles, Kirschmeyer and Evans with six each and Morgan Jordan with four tackles, a sack and an interception.
