The week in sports

‘C’ soccer team ties Interlake

The Mount Si Wildcat ‘C’ soccer team played a gritty game against the Interlake Saints recently overcoming adversity to salvage a tie, despite playing most of the game with a man down.

Nick Harmon opened scoring from his position as stopper with a perfectly placed high floater from 40-yards out. About three minutes later, Adam Baumgartner received a red card while nearly scoring again when he collided with Interlake’s keeper, causing the ‘Cats to play with a man down for the remaining 75 minutes of the game.

The Saints took advantage of the situation to pull ahead with the next two goals. At that point the Wildcats played with one less defender, moving the extra man to forward to go for the score. The defense held Interlake scoreless after that move, and the Wildcats moved back to offense making several great attacks. Finally, defender Baker Borgen scored, playing forward instead of his usual defense. The defense, lead by T.C. Service, continued to hold Interlake off for the tie.

Track team topples Mercer Island

The gray clouds enveloped Mercer Island High School as the Mount Si track team approached, bringing their own storm with them. When the carnage was over, the boys team had whipped the Islanders soundly, 84-60.

Leading the way was the senior trio of Adam Rothgeb, Brady Barry and Alex Grazda. Rothgeb won the 110 hurdles in an eye-popping early season time of 14 minutes, six seconds, putting him among the state leaders in the event. He then followed with victories in the 300 hurdles and the triple jump. Barry teamed with Rothgeb, Bradford Wilbert and Stefan Marth for a stirring victory over a quick Mercer Island team, posting a time slightly over a second off from the school record.

Barry continued his dominating day with victories in the 200 meters and the long jump and barely missed sweeping the sprints, getting outleaned at the tape in the 100 meters. Grazda won the javelin contest with a throw of seven feet in addition to placing second in the discus with a throw of 119 feet.
