Wildcat tennis falls to Skyline

Playing just one match last week, the Mount Si High School girls tennis team ended it on a tough note, falling to Skyline in a rain-shortened match Tuesday, March 18.

Skyline took seven of eight completed matches, as the ninth was rained out. That match will not be made up, because it had no outcome on the total match score.

The lone Mount Si win was by sophomore Meghan Travis, who worked as hard on the tennis court as she did on the soccer field last fall. Travis’ effort paid off, as she rallied from a set down to win 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 in a number-six singles match over Skyline’s Molly Knutson. All other matches were relatively easy Spartan victories.

It’s all a matter of confidence for the team right now, said Wildcat coach Sue Gallacher. That was evident in the pro-set match against Bothell that opened Mount Si’s season.

“You’ve got to have the mentality where you can’t quit at anytime,” Gallacher said. “Sometimes [with] these kids, if they get down a little bit, it’s over.”

Gaining that experience and confidence will be key for this team as the season wears on. In Travis’ case, though, that confidence is already growing.

Mount Si is home against Interlake on Thursday, March 27. First serve is scheduled for around 3:30 p.m. at Mount Si, weather permitting.
