Their trip to the state boys basketball tournament already confirmed, the Cedarcrest Red Wolves are making their way through district play-offs. Saturday, Feb. 11, the boys defeated Sehome 65 to 21 in the first round of district play, and Tuesday, Feb. 14, they won over Anacortes, 76 to 60. The team travels to Mount Vernon Saturday, Feb. 18, to play Squalicum for the District 1 championships in division 2A.

Tuesday’s semi-final game was led in scoring by junior Zach Taylor with 28 points, followed by Justin Houser with 12, Tanner Marty, 11, Jordan Corpus, 9, John Soule, 6, Tyler Reeves, 5, Chris Dowd, 4, and Nick Cardon with a single point for the night.

Scoring was lower, but more widely distributed against Sehome, where nine Red Wolves put it in the net. Taylor had 17 points, Corpus, 11, Houser, 10, Marty and Reeves, 5 each, Soule and Hunter Lee, 4 each, and Dowd and Cardon, 3 each.

These wins came after Cedarcrest honored its seniors Feb. 3, and got back some of its own against Kings Feb. 1. Senior night was Feb. 3, during a game against Lakewood. Seniors Chris Dowd, Hunter Lee, Nick Cardon, Braden Bakke, Tanner Marty, Tyler Reeves and Justin Houser were all very strong team leaders, Coach Prince said, and their hard work really helped the team to bond, and to want to work even harder.

“I was happy that all our seniors were able  to play some solid minutes and each one was able to score,” Prince said.

Cardon made 19 points on the night, followed by Taylor with 14, Marty, 7, Houser, 6, Dowd, 5, Lee, 4, Reeves, Corpus and Bakke with 3 each, and Soule and Bennett Minnie, with 2 points each.

In a Feb. 1 rematch with Kings, the Red Wolves recovered from an earlier away loss to the team, to defeat the team 72 to 61.

“We were able to feed off the energy of the crowd and it was one of best defensive games of the season,” said Cedarcrest coach Mark Prince. “We played defense for the full 32 minutes, which you have to do against a team like Kings. They will always keep playing hard and never stop coming at you.”

For the night, Taylor picked up 26 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocks. Reeves and Houser both scored 10, and Corpus followed with 9. Corpus also had 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Reeves chalked up 3 rebounds and 2 assists, and Houser also had 2 rebounds.
