Eagles down Tolt
The Snoqualmie Middle School Eagles seventh-grade basketball team traveled to Tolt for a contest against the Thunderbirds last week that they won 51-19. Dillon Shaine put the first lights on the scoreboard with a driving layup and the Eagles took flight from there. Taylor Campbell punished Tolt inside by scoring eight first-half points and controlling the boards. Jordan Kinnune made life difficult for the Thunderbirds by registering steals on four consecutive possessions that led to transition baskets for himself, Chaz Blair and Zac Pearlstein. Once again Zander Nelson put on a basketball clinic displaying his all-around game by scoring 18 points, dominating the glass, providing textbook defense and distributing the ball. The Eagles widened their lead in the fourth quarter as Trey Botten, Brett Duncan, Justin Downer, Cody Blair and Robbie Knecht all tickled the twine to complete a total team effort. The win pushes the Eagles record to 3-0.
Hawks defeat
Pine Lake
Behind Lucas Zupan’s 20 points and 15 rebounds, the Chief Kanim seventh-grade boys basketball team defeated Pine Lake 46-43. The Hawks attacked the rim and controlled the boards in the second half to preserve the win. In addition to Zupan, Tanner Riley added 19 points and four assists, Aaron Moetueli had three rebounds, Drew Handy had three points, Gehrig Uhles had three rebounds, Josh Murphy had two assists, Eric Purphy had two rebounds, Brian Guse had one steal, Rosco Castagno had an assist and Edgar Tarp had two rebounds.
Hawk varsity downs Bulldogs
Joey Evans, with 28 points, 10 rebounds and five steals, led the Chief Kanim eighth-grade boys basketball team to a 58-46 win over Pine Lake last week. The Hawks started slow but exploded in the third quarter to pull away. The Hawks press was too much for the Bulldogs. In addition to Evans, Tyson Riley added four points and five assists, Chad Billings had 14 points, Zach Kirchmeyer had two points, Zach Lindor had two rebounds, Zach Brevick had six rebounds, Alex Heibert had four points, Brian Johnson had two rebounds, Josh Snow had two steals and Spencer MacEwan had two points and four rebounds.
Hawks defeat Thunderbirds
Aaron Moetului scored 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead the Chief Kanim Middle School seventh-grade boys basketball team to a 47-20 win over Tolt last week. The Hawks used an aggressive press to get off to a fast start and never looked back. In addition to Moetului, Tanner Riley added 11 points and eight rebounds, Drew Handy had two points and four assists, Josh Murphy had two steals, Eric Murphy had a point and two steals, Brian Guse had two points, Gehrig Uhles had four points, Edgar Tarp had three rebounds and Rosco Castagno had a point and two rebounds.
Evans leads team to win
Joey Evans led the Chief Kanim eighth-grade boys basketball team to a 54-28 win over Tolt last week. Evans had 15 points and five assists in the win. The Hawks started off slow in the first half, but exploded the game wide open in the third quarter crashing the boards and getting out on the fast break. In addition to Evans, Tyson Riley added nine points, seven steals and five assists. Teammate Chad Billings pumped in an amazing 24 points along with four steals. Alex Heibert had four points, Brian Johnson had a point, Spencer MacEwan had seven points, Zach Brevick had two points, Zach Lindor had four rebounds and Josh Snow had four rebounds.
Eagles in overtime
The Snoqualmie Middle School seventh-grade boys basketball team hosted the Wolverines from Pine Lake last week. Consecutive buckets at the end of the first quarter by Justin Downer and Code Blair gave the Eagles a slim one-point margin. In the second quarter the two teams continued to exchange baskets as the Eagles fought to protect their slim lead. Zander Nelson, Taylor Campbell and Jordan Kinnune provided the scoring in the period while Trey Botten, Dillon Shaine and Brett Duncan applied the defensive pressure. The Eagles did not put any distance between themselves and the stubborn Wolverines in the second quarter and the score at halftime was 25-24 for SMS.
Nelson opened the third quarter up with slashing drives to the rack providing 10 third-quarter points and assisted on a hoop by Chaz Blair and two buckets by Campbell. The quick-footed Eagle defenders cut off the shooting angles for Pine Lake and the result was a five-point lead after three periods. The Wolverines were not finished with the fight, however, and they clawed their way into a tie after four periods of play. Kinnune opened the overtime session up with an old-fashioned three-point play and the Eagles flashed their talons to protect their lead. After a hard-earned defensive stop, Zander Nelson again needled his way through the Wolverine defense for a twisting, contorting layup. The lead bulged to seven points after Nelson was fouled and he calmly sank both free throws. The Eagles finished the Wolverines off 56-53 in an overtime thriller. Nelson finished with 32 points and Campbell pitched in 13 to bring home the victory. The win moves the Eagles’ record to 4-0.

The Chief Kanim Middle School seventh-grade varsity basketball team traveled to Maywood last week where they won a hard fought ball game 46-32. The game was close in the first half but suffocating defense and controlling the boards helped the Hawks secure the win. Lucas Zupan led the effort with 26 points and 17 rebounds. Josh Murphy contributed excellent defense, Eric Murphy added eight points, Aaron Moetului had four points and four rebounds, Drew Handy had a point, Gehrig Uhles had seven points, Brian Guse added excellent defense, Edgar Tarp had two rebounds and Rosco Castagno had an assist.

Eagles score upset
The Snoqualmie Middle School eighth-grade varsity hoops team engineered a major upset last week as they bounced Pine Lake from their undefeated perch, 51-48. It took a total team effort from start to finish with the Eagles applying constant pressure on both offense and defense to thwart any early thoughts of a comeback. With Kyle Cantalini running the offense, Cody Tipton and Dominic Catanzaro led the first-half assault with Catanzaro controlling the inside for six points and Tipton dishing from all over the court for another nine points. Ben Olson hit some tough shots and free throws to add five, while Mitch Hubner connected for three high-arching rainbows from downtown to bolster the Eagle’s lead after three quarters, 39-28.
Olson and Brandon Smith continued the aggressive play, contributing key rebounds despite playing with four fouls each. Both players increased their intensity on defense, stifling the visitors from the plateau. With time running out no subs, and the score getting closer, the Eagles relied on some key plays down the stretch to seal the win. Catanzaro hit a clutch inside put back for two, ending the game with 13. Tipton nailed three-straight free throws to lead all scorers with 16 points and Cantalini ended the scoring with some key foul shots, closing with six. All team members contributed to the scoreboard, inspiring the Eagles to their impressive victory.
