Snoqualmie fishing to close

The majority of the Snohomish Basin, including the Skykomish, Snohomish and Snoqualmie rivers, will close to all fishing beginning March 1. This includes the March and April catch-and-release season on the Skykomish. Tokul Creek, a tributary of the Snoqualmie River, is closed to all fishing March 1 through Nov. 30.

An exception to the closure is the Snohomish River downstream of U.S. Highway 2, which will remain open through March 31. This area is closed to steelhead fishing, but open to fishing for other species.

The effective closure dates are March 1-May 31 for the Snohomish River upstream of U.S. Highway 2; April 1 through May 31 for the Snohomish River downstream of Highway 2 and March 1-Nov. 30 for Tokul Creek, a tributary of the Snoqualmie River.

This closure applies to steelhead and all other game fish. The exact location of the closures are for the Skykomish River, from its mouth to the forks; Snohomish River from its mouth (Burlington Northern railroad bridges near State Route 529) upstream to the confluence of Snoqualmie and Skykomish rivers; Snoqualmie River from its mouth to Snoqualmie Falls; and Tokul Creek from its mouth to the posted cable marker, approximately 700 feet upstream of its mouth.

The reason for the action is that the forecast for Snohomish River wild winter steelhead returning this winter is 3,800 fish, less than 60 percent of the basin’s winter steelhead spawning escapement goal of 6,500. Due to the low run size forecast this year, every effort is being taken to minimize impacts on the wild run of steelhead. This closure includes catch-and-release fishing because of concerns for potential incidental hooking mortality and disturbance of spawning wild fish.
