Trenkamp’s first college softball season comes to a close

The college softball season for a local freshman has come to a tough end in during the team’s conference tournament.

Amy Trenkamp, a former Mount Si High School star shortstop who played several positions this season for Charleston Southern University (CSU), went 1-4 in her team’s final contest of the season, a 3-2 loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi May 12 in the Big South Tournament presented by Aeropostale.

The Buccaneers finished their year 14-40-1 after two straight losses in the tournament: First, a 12-0 shellacking at the hands of eventual runner-up Radford, who was the host school for the tournament, then the loss to TA&M-community college.

Trenkamp, after early struggles this season, finished the year with a respectable .268 batting average. She hit six doubles and three triples this season, and had decent on-base (.333) and slugging (.366) percentages. The freshman stole three bases this season, which tied for second on the Buccaneers.

CSU coach Jeff Aumend, in a news release, said, “This season was a great building experience for the future.”

Two ex-Wildcat softball stars honored

Two former Mount Si Wildcat softball players received big honors last week.

Kayla Jayne and Ashley Svarthumle, both playing for Pierce College, were named to the first team of the West Division for the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC).

The two ex-Wildcats were among four Pierce players who made the first team and three who made the second team. Teammate Yukari Kuranuki was named division “most valuable player” for leading her Pierce squad to a strong 23-7 finish in league, 26-26 overall.

As for Svarthumle, her efforts in helping her team did not go unnoticed. The freshman hit 14 home runs and picked up 72 runs batted in this season. The home run total tied for fifth in the league, while the RBI number tied for second, just five behind the league leader, Ryanne Horton of South Puget Sound. Horton picked up 77 runs batted in this season.

The season came to an end for Pierce May 19-20 at the NWAACC tournament in Portland. After winning their first game, they lost their next two. In the last game, against Edmonds, Jayne hit a home run, but it was not enough as Edmonds Community College won 15-6.
