Firefighter climbs ladder to full-time work

FALL CITY – When talking with Phil Stevens, one learns quickly that he is a man of few words.

Words, however, seem trivial in a job where actions count more than anywhere else.

Stevens accomplished a lifelong dream by becoming a full-time firefighter for King County Fire Protection District 27 in Fall City last month after volunteering for the district for the past three years.

Stevens is not the first one in his family to slide down the pole. His grandfather, Wayne Floyd, was a firefighter in Snoqualmie and his father, Gene Stevens, was a volunteer firefighter in Fall City for more than 20 years.

Stevens also saw his brother volunteer for the Fall City district and eventually become a paramedic.

He grew up wanting to be a firefighter but started to vacillate about the idea later on.
