Wildcats defeat Vikings

The Mount Si Wildcats girls’ basketball team used a strong inside presence and clutch defense to notch a 20-point win over the 4A Puyallup Vikings recently in the season opener for both teams. Senior center Karin Brevick led all scorers with 15 points, while junior guard Rachel Travis added 12, and fellow guard junior Whitney Beyerlin added 11 in the 68-48 win.
The game won’t be remembered for the efforts of the offensive attack, balanced as it was. Rather, the play most people likely will remember is the huge defensive nugget made by the Wildcats’ junior Marie Will with 3:59 left in the third quarter.
As Puyallup’s Danika Lawson was cruising in to score a quick basket with the Vikings down 10 points, Will came in from behind and collided hard with Lawson, blocking her shot attempt as both fell to the floor. The fans roared their approval, although Will was called for a foul on the play. Will described the practice drill that inspired the play.
“We do this drill called ‘rush,’ where one person has the ball and two people have to go and then on their way back they have to try and get the ball away,” she said.
Lawson hit one of two free throws, but that play, albeit hard, was a testament to the strong defensive game played by Mount Si.
“I think the whole team played pretty good [defense] for the most part tonight. We had a couple of breakdowns, but nothing major,” said the Wildcats’ coach Dirk Hansen.
Brevick believes that Mount Si’s intensity made Puyallup nervous.
“It was an awesome game because we came out right away with such great intensity. I think we surprised them because last year they beat us pretty bad and we just came back this year,” Brevick said.
Team drops game to Bothell
The Mount Si girls’ varsity basketball team lost a preseason game to the Bothell Cougars last week 70-53. Whitney Beyerlin lead the scoring with 18 points while teammate Rachel Travis added nine. Tara Eddings dropped in four points, Karin Brevick added 10 and Nicole Remish had six.
JV girls’ team defeat Bothell
With Alina Plavsky leading the effort with 16 points, the Mount Si girls’ JV basketball team defeated Bothell last week 48-38.
Jessica Marley added 13 points as the Wiildcats came back from a nine point deficit to win.
Boys take two games
The Mount Si boys’ basketball team kicked off their season playing in the Redmond jamboree recently. In the first game the ydefeated the host, Redmond, 27-26 and in the second game they thumped Enumclaw 22-15.
