Flower power: Cedarcrest FFA students take second at state in floral design

Cedarcrest High’s FFA Floral Design Team placed second at the Washington State Competition in Vancouver, Wash.
“Hard work, determination, and a year long commitment, are what it takes to be competitive in the FFA Floral Design competitions,” said Cedarcrest FFA Advisor Sarah Thomas, and that is exactly what this year’s team is all about. Weekly practices and many competitions during the school year enabled the members of the Floral Design Team to achieve an impressive success.
“This team has worked harder than any other team I have coached; they put their all into every competition and are well deserving of this honor,” Thomas said.
Three members placed in the top 10 individual scores, and as a team, Cedarcrest was only 10 points shy of first place.
“My FFA experiences have been some of my best high school memories, and I am sad to see it end,” said Alea Carr, who is the 2010-2011 team captain.
The state floral design competition include many facets of design, such as a 50-plant identification test in which CHS placed third, a floral arrangement piece where they received third, and a 20-question problem solving sequence in which CHS took second. Overall Team Activity received a first place, and the team took second place in an individual 50-question test.
