The Mount Si Wildcat wrestling team traveled to Hazen High
School last Saturday to tangle with the host Highlanders and Redmond
Mustangs. Still licking their collective wounds from the close Liberty loss on
Thursday, the `Cats overpowered Hazen, 71 – 0, and doubled up Redmond, 50-25.
Jordan Prior began the Hazen onslaught with a hard fought 7 – 3
decision at 103 pounds. After Andrew Ahmedi’s 16 -1 technical fall,
Mount Si made quick work of the Highlander matmen. Jason Moe, Ben Veyna,
Chad Mills, Blake Moore, and Hiram Tame all recorded pins that pushed the
Wildcats to a commanding 38 – 0 lead.
Payton Thompson’s superior conditioning showed through at
145 pounds as he controlled the third period for an 8 – 5 win. Matt
Murphy fought back and forth at 152 pounds, but after six minutes he came out
the victor, 8 -4.
Kasey Robinson surprised Hazen’s Chris Growden at 160
pounds with a head and arm throw that ended in a pin at 1:57. At 171, Jed
McDaniel came through on top, 4-3. Brad Davis’ aggressiveness showed through as
he recorded a pin at 1:55. Dylan Seubert and Sean Sexton finished the
match with quick first-round pins to finish the scoring.
The second match of the day saw Mount Si take on the 4A
Redmond Mustangs. Both Prior and Ahmedi garnered forfeits at 103 and
112 pounds. Moe took a close match in the first period and turned it up in the
second round with a 3:07 pin. Veyna kept the momentum going with a quick
pin in thirty seconds.
Mills’ 130-pound match was close all the way, but the Mount Si
junior ended up a 4-1 winner. Behind 0 – 5 after the first round, Moore turned
a second round reversal into a 3:15 pin, upping the Wildcat lead to 33 – 0.
Tame’s near side cradle proved to be the difference with a pin at 1:34
in the 140-pound class. At 145 pounds, Thompson won by forfeit.
Redmond’s David Schlosser was too much for Mount Si’s
Murphy, earning the first Redmond victory at 16 – 3. Mount Si’s Robinson lost
by pin in the160-pound class. McDaniel met veteran Redmond wrestler
Matt Brown at 171 pounds. Wrestling tough, McDaniel lost by a much
closer match than the 7 – 0 indicated.
At 189 pounds, Davis tried to keep the match close but lost by pin at
5:36. Seubert was then pinned at the 3:18 mark by Redmond’s Ben Poort.
Sexton used a little Greco-Roman flare with nice throw that saw him a
first round winner by pin at 1:33.
With the absence of Kentlake, several Wildcat JV wrestlers saw
action on Saturday. Wrestling against Redmond and Hazen’s varsity
wrestlers, the Wildcats showed their mettle posting a combined record of 13 – 5.
David Crotts, 2 – 0; Brad Connor, 3 -0; and Nick Martindale 2 -0, all
won by pin. Jeff Stone again showed his flare with an impressive 3 – 0 day.
Kyle Cunningham went 1 -1 with a pin. Brandon Prior went 1 – 1;
Bobby Taylor, 0- 1; Ryan Smith, 0- 1; and Kyle Jacobson, 1 – 1; all
wrestled close, competitive matches.
