Tennis team falls in final regular season match
The Mount Si boys’ tennis team fell in their final regular season match against league power Newport. All nine matches were won by the Knights.
In singles action, the best fights were put up by Bryce Wilson, Kyle Tjossem, Stephen Salmon and Kevin Sandin, but the Knight opponents all took care of business: Jason Chang over Wilson, 6-1, 6-2; Zach Chen over Salmon 6-0, 6-3; Eric Go over Tjossem 6-2, 6-2; and Alex Quan over Sandin 6-3, 6-0.
Fights were put up by Mount Si in all three doubles matches, but they were all short-lived as Newport took control early in each match and rolled to victories in those contests.
The one exhibition match went to Newport, as well. The name of the Knight player who won the match was not available, but that player beat Mount Si’s Jerrett Rhoads 8-3.
A great day for Mount Si boys’ golf

Monday, Oct. 16, was a super day for Mount Si Wildcats boys’ golf as the team placed third at the Kingco tournament and took top individual honors.
Jon Larson won the Kingco Medalist title, firing a 3-under-par 69 at the par-72 Snohomish Golf Course to take home the honors. “It was a big accomplishment because it was one of my first winning events, pretty much ever. I’ve been playing competitions since I was a little kid and I’ve always came in second,” Larson, a junior, said.
Larson’s strength came on the back nine, shooting a 33. The key was an eagle on the 17th hole that was a par-4 hole. Larson fired his tee shot down the middle of the fairway. He then used a wedge on his second shot. “I was just like, ‘for once just attack the flag, just go for like a foot,’ and I smacked it. It bounced about three inches to the left of the hole and bounced in for eagle,” Larson said.
Larson was not the only story as Bradley Harrelson shot a 74. His round included the biggest shot of the day, a hole in one on the 13th hole, a par 3. Harrelson, at first, didn’t know what had occurred. “It took me a couple of seconds to realize what had happened,” the freshman said. Harrelson told the Valley Record he used an 8-iron on the 126-yard hole to bag the hole in one, which was his second in approximately seven months; his first happened at the TPC course on Snoqualmie Ridge, his home course.
Mike Rutledge paced the ‘Cats with a 73. Larson, Harrelson and Rutledge all qualified for the Sea-King District Tournament this week at Riverbend Golf Course in Kent.
Matt Prewett fired an 85, Jeff Hoyopatubbi shot a round of 86 and Tanner Ostby carded a round of 87 to round out the Mount Si contingent, whose 387 team score tied for third with Skyline and Issaquah. Mercer Island won the team title with a 370 score.
