Tough week for boys’ golf

The Mount Si boys’ golf team had a difficult week last week. Last week, Sept. 18, Mount Si fell to Issaquah 181-194 at Fall City’s Snoqualmie Falls Golf Course. Mike Rutledge led the way for the Wildcats, firing an even-par 36. However, an Eagle freshman was the big story as Kevin Moon shot a three-under-par 33 to grab medalist honors. Rutledge’s effort was complimented by 38s from Luke Dietsch and Bradley Harrelson. All of the Eagle golfers shot under 40, with Jeremy Wendleken and Cale Frye each shooting 36s to pace Issaquah.

On Thursday, Sept. 21, the Wildcats went to Plateau Golf and Country Club in Sammamish to face the Skyline Spartans and despite a 39 from Harrelson, which earned him medalist honors, Mount Si fell 208-214 to the Spartans. Rutledge shot a 40 and Dietsch fired a round of 42.

Mount Si plays Mercer Island at Mount Si Golf Course Thursday, Sept. 28. Tee time is 3:30 p.m.

Wildcat tennis runs into buzzsaw

The Mount Si boys’ tennis team ran into a buzzsaw Sept. 18, at Skyline as the Spartans won all nine matches played in dominating fashion.

All but one singles match featured the Skyline player winning at least one of the sets 6-0 over the Wildcat opponent. In the one match where this didn’t occur, Dan Costello of the Spartans had to work to overcome a challenge from Mount Si’s Nick Schwarzmiller in the second set. The final score was 6-1, 6-3.

Mount Si put up a tougher test for the Spartans in doubles, but Skyline took care of business in these matches, as well. Ryan Clark and Tyler Van Grumsven of the Spartans faced the toughest test of all in doubles against the Wildcats’ Stephen Salmon and Ryan Schwab, but the Skyline pair fought off the Mount Si challenge 6-3, 6-4.

There was one bright spot to report, though. In a non-counting exhibition match following the nine official matches, the Wildcats’ Kevin Sandin and Isaac Farrar won 8-5 over Steven Lockhart and Alex Hu, currently Skyline’s top two junior varsity players.

A match scheduled for last Wednesday, Sept. 20, against Bellevue was rained out. Mount Si is home to Interlake this Wednesday, Sept. 27. Match time is 3:30 p.m.
