Softball
JV drops close game
In a disappointing loss, the Mount Si JV softball team led Newport 14-7, but committed four errors in the last two innings on April 2. The team lost 19-18. The Wildcats had an excellent offensive outing and led for most of the game. Sloppy play in the bottom of the sixth allowed the Knights to plate six runs and sneak away with the win.
Ten different girls scored runs, and Kali Walker and Brianna Campbell had three stolen bases each. Samantha Riley hit a homerun in the sixth to give the Wildcats an 18-14 lead.
Wildcats blast Islanders
The Mount Si JV softball team defeated Mercer Island by a score of 13-5 on April 5. The team jumped out early scoring seven in the first and never looked back. Eight different Wildcats plated runs and highlights came from Brianna Campbell with a triple in the fourth, and Brittni Mortensen’s first base hit of the season, which led to her first RBI.
Amy Ayers did an excellent job at second base with three defensive outs. The team (5-2) played much better ball, allowing only six hits and committing only three errors. Lynnae McKiernan picked up her third pitching win of the season with a solid effort.
JV suffers third defeat
Facing a tough pitcher and great hitting, the Mount Si girls’ JV softball team fell to Issaquah last week, 11-1. The team played well through four innings and trailed by a score of 5-0. They finally pushed a run across the plate in the sixth as Lynnae McKiernan’s base hit scored Samantha Riley. Riley finished with two of the team’s four hits. Defensively, Amy Ayers had a great game at second base with four outs.
Track and Field
Girls’ track team defeats Totems
With Kristen Berndt winning three events, the Mount Si girls’ track team defeated Sammamish April 8, 76-73. Berndt won the javelin with a throw of 112 feet, 6 inches; the 100-meter hurles in a time of 16.7 seconds; and the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 50.9 seconds.
Nicole Remish ran outstanding times of 26.7 seconds and 1:02 to win the 200 and 400 respectively. Caitlin Braun won the discus with a toss of 106 feet, 10 inches, and had a personal best in the shot with a throw of 35 feet, 1/2 inch. Piper Sherbon won the triple jump with a leap of 35 feet, 8 and 1/2 inches and placed second in the hot, discus and javelin.
Devan Paulus won the 3,200 and Barb Holm had a personal best in both the 800 and 1,600. Vanessa Scalzo also had a personal best with a second place in the 800.
‘Cats fall to Totems
The Mount Si boys’ track team lost to Sammamish April 9 despite several outstanding performances. Erik Tierney won the shot with a throw of 43 feet, 11 inches, and Alex Grazda won the javelin with a throw of 155 feet, 2 inches.
Mount Si does well at Renton Invite
Members of both the Mount Si boys’ and girls’ track teams competed last weekend in the Renton Invitational track meet. The boys’ team took eighth out of 11 teams and the girls took third.
For the girls, Kristen Berndt brought home the gold in the javelin with a throw of 128 feet, 1 inch, a new meet record. Berndt also took third in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 48.91 seconds. Piper Sherbon had several outstanding performances. She took second in the shot with a throw of 36 feet, 11 inches. Sherbon also took second in the long jump with a distance of 17 feet, 3 inches, and second in the triple jump with a distance of 37 feet, 1 inch.
Caitlin Braun took second in the discus with a distance of 122 feet, and Shanon Posey took third in the javelin with a throw of 119 feet, 9 inches.
For the boys’ team, Alez Grazda scored a gold in the javelin with a throw of 167 feet, 4 inches, and Steven Johnson took third in the pole vault, clearing a height of 12 feet.
Baseball
‘Wildcats down Saints
Behind the homerun and three RBIs of Craig Weber, the Mount Si varsity baseball team dismantled Interlake 13-1 on April 5. Brandon Sales contributed two doubles and four RBIs with teammate Chris Brown racking up three hits including a double. Ian Opsal had two hits and one double and the duo of Adam Dentz and Mike Lindor shared pitching duties for five innings as the game was called due to the 10-run rule.
Soccer
JV drops game to Totems
Despite goals from Cody Van Winkle and Ian Falconer, the Mount Si boys’ JV soccer team lost to Sammamish on April 5, 7-2.
Varsity falls to Totems
Dan Barnes scored the only goal on a corner kick from Yosef Yetneberk for Mount Si but it wasn’t enough as the team fell 2-1 against the Totems on April 5.
Mount Si ties Mercer Island
The Mount Si varsity soccer team tied Mercer Island despite a 10-minute overtime period 1-1 last week. Dan Barnes scored a goal on an assist from Yosef Yetneberk in the 18th minute while Mercer Island scored their goal in the 50th minute.
Golf
Wildcats defeat Red Wolves
Jess Sanford led with a 45 for medalist honors as the Mount Si golf team defeated Cedarcrest 288-262. Shannon Kelly followed Sanford with a 51, Rachel Keinath had a 42, Becky Wada a 54 and both Katie Stapleton and Alyssa Bliven shot 60.
Mount Si falls to Issaquah
Playing at Snoqualmie Falls Golf Course, the Mount Si golf team lost a match to Issaquah last week, 256-235. Jess Sanford was low for Mount Si with a 43 followed by Rachel Keinath with a 41, Alyssa Bliven with a 52, Katie Stapleton with a 55, Shannon Kelley with a 55, Becky Wada with a 56, Chelsea Sheldon with a 61 and Whitney Eand with a 64.
Newport squeaks by ‘Cats
The Mount Si golf team nearly pulled off an upset last week as they lost to Newport by one stroke, 261-262. Jess Sanford led Mount Si as the medalist, shooting a 42, Rachel Keinath had a 53, Katie Stapleton a 54, Becky Wada a 56 and Alyssa Bliven a 57.
Tennis
JV wins two
The Mount Si JV girls’ tennis team won two matches last week defeating Interlake 8-5 and then Liberty 12-0 with everyone winning in the latter.
Singles winners against Interlake were Kailene Curnow, Rebecca Coffey, Daisy Ponce and Leah Coffey. Winning their doubles matches were the teams of Curnow/Rebecca Coffey, Cary Nelson/Kathryn McFarland, Corrin Kruse/Britni Schwab and Dana Christenson/Rosie Lockie.
Tennis team shuts out Liberty
The Mount Si girls’ varsity tennis team shut out the Liberty Patriots last week, 9-0. Jaclyn Boals won 3-6, 5-0, when her opponent forfeited due to injuries. Tennyson Salopek had an oustanding two-hour long match which she won, 2-6, 7-5 and 6-2. Taryn Ellison also had an outstanding two-hour long match winning 3-6, 6-4 and 6-2.
Erin Hart dominated her opponent 6-0, 6-4, and Audrey Christianson creamed her opponent, 6-3, 6-1.
The team did just as well in doubles play. Boals and Salopek won 7-6, 6-2 and Hart with Ellison dominated their match 6-1, 6-2. The duo of Nicole Vanerick and Britta Safstrom played a strong doubles match winning, 6-1, 6-4.
