SNOQUALMIE – The Mount Si boys’ cross country team is on the move. After an 0-8 season in 2003, the determined boys have come into 2004 with a new focus and are training their butts off.

Everyone on the team is logging more miles each week as well as incorporating a lot of sprints, plyometric drills, weight training and core work. In the past most teams didn’t think twice about beating Mount Si, but it’s a whole new story this year.

After a close loss to Issaquah where the team had three runners finish in the top five, there was a taste of what victory could feel like. That taste has lead to a hunger for it now. Last year the focus always was having fun at practice, but now the runners are experiencing how fun hard work can be when it ends in victory. Runners realize that all the dedication, mental energy, sacrifice and hard work is completely worth it. And that makes it so much sweeter in the end.

Last Wednesday the boys experienced this as they fought for their victory over Sammamish. The cats beat Sammamish 22-33 (in cross country the lower scoring team is the winner).

Brad Allen smoked everybody, running way ahead of the lead pack and finishing in 17:29, 32 seconds ahead of second place teammate, freshman Drake da Ponte. These two love to work hard and have a couple spots in the state cross country meet on Nov. 6 within their grasp.

Finishing fourth and fifth for the Wildcats were Colin Parsons and Rob Jepson. They did not run in the first meet against Issaquah, but clinched the victory against Sammamish. Parsons is someone with a lot of natural ability and as soon as he can get in some good workouts, and a little more mileage, you will see him up there with Allen and da Ponte. Jepson really came through in the end, sprinting by four guys at the last second to take fifth.

Thomas Goble had an off-day, finishing 10th, but he’ll be back in the mix. Right behind him, Robbie Pekara ran an incredible race, dropping almost two minutes off his previous time from the week before. Owen Strom, a freshman, also ran well dropping almost a minute from his previous time.

The girls also came through with a win, lead by Devan Paulus (second), Meaghan Dunklee (third) and freshman Katie Hogan in her first race finished fourth.
