‘Cats keep up intensity

SNOQUALMIE – The Mount Si High School Wildcats hosted a four-way meet with Mercer Island, Issaquah and Liberty last Thursday. This was a day for the record books as almost half of the Wildcats’ runners ran personal bests and almost everyone ran seasonal bests.

Mercer Island, the former boys’ league champions, dominated the meet on both the boys’ and girls’ side. The real race for both teams was with Liberty, Issaquah and Mount Si.

Unfortunately for the boys’ team, it lost to both by just one point. Once again running strong for the Wildcats was Rob Jepson. Jepson held his spot for most of the race, going back and forth with the mob of Islanders to finish eighth in an awesome time and huge personal best of 17:16.

Freshman Drake da Ponte also ran well and redeemed himself after a tough two weeks of practice and racing. He ran as hard as he could, coming in at a personal best of 17:34. Racing smart he started conservatively and then went after runners, picking them off one by one. Finishing third for Mount Si was Brad Allen.

Thomas Goble ran well behind Allen to break 18 minutes for the first time in his career with a 17:49. Colin Parsons had a tough day finishing fifth for the Wildcats in 18 minutes. Not far behind him was freshman Owen Strom, who dropped almost a minute from his previous best to finish in 18:18. Finishing it up for the Wildcats were Robby Pekara with 19:16, Kyle Stanton-Wyman with 19:37, David Piekarczyk with 20:13 and Brandi Cason with 21:03.

The first time freshman Katie Hogan raced a 5K, she clocked in at 23:18. Now, just one month later, Hogan lead her team with a 21:10. This placed her 10th overall against the other teams. Teammate, Devan Paulus, was not far behind, running hard to maintain her position and finishing in 21:39. Finishing third for the Wildcats was Meaghan Dunklee, who did a great job recovering herself after she slipped back a little on the second lap. Ariane Barr ran a personal best of 22:01. Eleisha Davis also had a personal best finishing fourth for the ‘Cats. A big surprise was Barb Holm’s race.

Something clicked as Holm and teammate Rebecca Coffey worked with each other well, pulling one along when the other would fall back. Holm took charge and kept gaining momentum as she passed runners.

Thanks to everyone who showed up to root for the runners. It was an awesome meet, and a really fun atmosphere with the mass amounts of runners and fans. The upcoming league meet is at Lake Sammamish on Thursday, Oct. 21, and districts are at Lower Woodland Park by Green Lake in Seattle on Oct. 28.
