Thanksgiving, bluegrass style

When the pickers of the growing North Bend Bluegrass Jam needed a new place to play, the Mount Si Senior Center was there for them.

Now, the musicians are repaying the favor, with a special daytime bluegrass jam during the senior center’s Thanksgiving luncheon, noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15.

The group jams on the third Saturday of every month from 6-11 p.m. at the center, located at 411 Main Ave. S. in North Bend.

Locally, the jam, an informal gathering of bluegrass music enthusiasts, has been happening for 10 years.

“A jam is an organic gathering of musicians that gather together from around Puget Sound, pick, celebrate and share,” said North Bend jam founder Terry O’Brien, who began the event with his wife, Mary Sackman.

The group started at the North Bend railroad depot, but with as many as 60 pickers and fans showing up, it eventually outgrew the space.
