School bond passing, election official May 30

SNOQUALMIE – A $53.5-million school bond put to voters last week by the Snoqualmie Valley School District is barely passing as the last remaining absentee ballots are being counted.

In a vote that required a 60 percent supermajority for approval, the school bond was receiving a 60.71 percent approval – 3,356 in favor of and 2,172 against – in the latest voting results available before the Valley Record’s press time on May 27. At that time 80 percent of the absentee votes had been counted. Ballots from the May 20 election will be certified on May 30.

A bulk of the bond, which was the largest the district has ever proposed, would pay for the construction of a new elementary school and a new middle school. The elementary school, which would be located in Snoqualmie, would be open by the first day of school in 2005 and accommodate 500 students. The middle school, which would be located in North Bend, would be open by the first day of school in 2007 and accommodate 600 students.
