North Bend to revoke county police contract

NORTH BEND – Minutes before the state announced that a site near North Bend is officially on the list of contenders for a sex-offender halfway house, city officials delivered a letter to King County Executive Ron Sims giving notice that they plan to revoke a nearly $1-million contract for police services with the county.

The letter was the latest in an ongoing battle the city and concerned residents have waged to keep a state Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) facility to transition sex offenders back into society away from a site near the Washington State Patrol Fire Training Academy off Exit 38 about four miles east of North Bend.

The move, aimed at showing state and county officials that the city is steadfastly opposed to placement of the facility near North Bend, sent a wave of surprise through the county and leaves the future of law enforcement in the city in question.
