North Bend mayor will not seek third term

NORTH BEND – Joan Simpson, the first woman elected mayor in the city of North Bend, won’t be seeking a third term in the Fall. In fact “Mayor Joan,” as she’s become affectionately known around town, will be leaving the city to live with her new fiancee near Lake Chelan when her term expires.

“It’s going to be very tough to leave,” said Simpson. “I’ve been involved in this city a very long time.”

Simpson, who was engaged Dec. 25, will leave behind 20 years of public service when she vacates her office at the end of the year.

“I think she’s done a great service for the city and staff of North Bend,” said City Administrator George Martinez. “It’s a big loss for us, but I’m happy and excited for her.”

Simpson began her career with the city in the mid-’80s as a member of the Planning Commission. In 1992, Simpson successfully ran for a spot on the City Council. In 1995, Simpson was elected the first woman mayor of North Bend, taking her spot at City Hall Jan. 1, 1996.
