Eagle kickers shut down Lochburn
On a crystal-clear Thursday afternoon in February, the Snoqualmie
varsity soccer team boarded their bright yellow “luxury” coach and trekked
to South Tacoma to challenge Lochburn Middle School.
With great anticipation of their first match, the Lady Eagles marched
onto the field, won the kick and proceeded to move the ball towards the net.
With the help of her teammates, Kayla Jane knocked in a goal within the first
60 seconds of play. Rock-solid teamwork and consistent offensive
pressure helped Kristen Berndt score her first goal a few minutes later.
Rarely did the ball penetrate the defensive side of the field,
allowing the Eagles several more goals. Strong mid-field support by Ariel
Waddell and Kelly Fletcher helped Robin Trombley boot in a shot.
The Eagles’ offensive experience also dominated the second half of
the game. Nimble ball control and sure-footed passing set up a Jeanie
Frantz goal. Just minutes later, Vikki Campbell received her opportunity
to score as well. Finally, just prior to the end of the game, the relentless
Berndt was forced to score her fifth goal from deep in midfield. The Eagles had
shut out Lochburn, 9-0.
Varsity Hawks down Issaquah, Beaver Lake
The Chief Kanim eighth-grade varsity basketball team traveled
to Issaquah on Feb. 10, ready for a tough battle and they got it.
The Hawks started out hot and led at the quarter, 15-8. Issaquah
came back and cut the Hawks’ lead to three, 32-29. Chief Kanim had a 23
point third quarter and found themselves in control 55-42. Issaquah made a
run, but Chief Kanim outlasted them and took the 68-59 victory.
All the players made contributions. Jeremy Johnston led all scorers
with 36, while adding 16 rebounds and eight blocked shots. Kris
Bostic played well, scoring 12 points. Hank Kennedy played a great
all-around game, scoring eight points, five
assists, six steals, four rebounds and three blocked shots.
Mike Lindor pounded the boards for eight rebounds while
contributing five points. Nick Sheldon and Brad Trombley had three and two
points respectively and Corey Roe and Matty Secord each added a point.
The following Thursday the Hawks had about all they could
handle against a very talented Beaver Lake team. The Hawks got off to a slow
start and found themselves down 13-11 at the end of the first quarter.
Things didn’t get any better and at the half CKMS trailed 31-18.
At the beginning of the third quarter the Birds came out playing
for pride and got on fire. They scored 12 unanswered points, shocking
Beaver Lake. Hawks went on to a 27 point quarter, while holding BLMS to
only nine.
With one nail-biting quarter to go CKMS was in the lead 45-39.
The Hawks had the 53-49 lead at the one-minute mark when Nick Sheldon
hit a free throw, sealing the miraculous come-from-behind 54-49 victory.
Scoring for the Hawks were Johnston with 20 points and
four blocked shots; Kennedy, 17; Lindor, 10; Bostic, four; Roe with two
and Sheldon with one. “All Star” Kennedy added 10 rebounds, four assists,
five steals and one blocked shot while Lindor added three rebounds,
three assists and two steals. Trombley, Jay Lewis and Jimmy Fleming
played hard and also helped their team.
The Hawks are now 2-0, having played two of the tougher teams in
the league. They will take one game at a time after the break and
continue working hard.
Coach Mickey Fowler believes in this team and they obviously
believe in themselves.
Hawks upset Eagles
The Chief Kanim Hawks’ eighth-grade JV boys basketball team
remained undefeated with an upset win over Snoqualmie on Feb. 16.
With under a minute left in the game and the score tied at 33 all,
Ian Opsal hit a foul shot to put the Hawks up 34-33. With 18 seconds
remaining on the clock, Patrick Haggerty nailed a 10-footer to put the Hawks up
36-33. He added a foul shot at the two-second mark to cement Chief
Kanim’s 37-33 win.
Hawk scorers were Curtis Dorr, 12 points; Alex Sattler, seven;
Andrew Conway, six; Ben Kruse, four; Haggerty, three; Junior Gonzalez,
two; and Opsal, one point. Jay Lewis also saw action in the game and
pulled down nine rebounds, while Sattler led the team with two assists. Dorr
recorded five steals and 10 rebounds and Conway had three blocked shots.
The offensive players of the game were Kruse and Dorr, while
Conway and Dorr took the top defensive honors. Best off the bench were Lewis
and Gonzalez.
” We have a lot of work to do,” said coach Dick Kirby afterwards. “We
are on top of the league now, but we have a long ways to go to get ready for
the rest of the season. We need to get a handle on our plays and our offense.
“We have some very good individuals, but will need to play as a
team to keep winning.”
