Hawks show improvement
The Chief Kanim Middle School seventh-grade JV girls basketball team had an improved showing in their second game of the season and the second time they played Tolt. Danielle Covello scored the first basket of the game to have the Hawks leading 2-0. The girls played with a lot of heart.
Chief Kanim defeats Tolt
The Hawks seventh-grade varsity basketball team traveled to Tolt last week where they won a hard fought battle against a tough Mustang team. The Hawks trailed most of the game, but used an aggressive defense to pull within four points. Alyssa McClauklin’s jump shot, Brie Busby’s put back and Brielle Buhner’s game-winning free throws iced the win in the final 36 seconds of the game. Coach Chris Blake was extremely proud of the teams hustle and never-give-up attitude.
Buhner led the offense with 12 points, 10 rebounds and 10 steals. Busby had four rebounds and two points while teammate MacKenzie Curley had two rebounds. McClaukin had six points and five rebounds, MacKenzie Will had a point and a steal, Grace Washam had two steals, Shauna Reid had two steals, Jesserah Helm had four steals and both Brittany Bear and Abi Peterson played an excellent defense.
Varsity drops game to Tolt
The Chief Kanim Middle School eighth-grade varsity basketball team lost a nail-biter to Tolt last week 23-25. Leading the effort for Chief Kanim was Madison Yakaboski with 23 points, 11 rebounds and seven steals. Teammate Nikki Stanton added four rebounds and two steals, Caylene Castagno had two steals, Vica Falcon had seven points and eight rebounds, Cassidy Will had two steals, Wendy Hecker played strong defense, Hannah Gogan added two rebounds, Miranda Pratt had two rebounds and Jessica Paladini had two points.
Hawk grapplers fall short
The Chief Kanim wrestling team opened its regular season with a home match against Maywood Middle School last week winning seven of 14 matches but falling short in the final score 33-48. The coaches noted they were very pleased with the sportsmanship and performance of their young wrestlers. Winning were Ben Larson, Andrew Sypher, Ryan Makela, Drew Handy, Stuart Hallock, Vince Vasquez, and RW Johnston.
In JV and sixth-grade wrestling action, the Hawks were led by great performances from Zach Storm, Josh Myers, Sean Duvall, David Johnston, Zach Van Buren, Jake Eadie, Keith Barnum, Taylor Yotz, Alex Cary, Dan Peterson, Trevor Carter, Taylor Hawes, Justin Bridges, Tino Paophavinh, Matt Vanourek, Jarret Adams, Patrick Brown and Shane Nicolson.
Eagles bounce back
The Snoqualmie Middle School eighth-grade girls’ varsity basketball team played two games last week, losing the first to Pine Lake 52-43, but bouncing back to defeat Maywood 55-35.
In their league opener against Pine Lake, SMS came out firing and behind the strong outside shooting of Caitie Richards and the aggressive defensive pressure of Jordyn Wilson and Maegan Welcome, the Eagles held a 25-23 halftime lead.
The Eagles blistering pace at the outset seemed to fade a bit in the second half, and despite the added points from Wilsons’ five and Danielle Crabtree’s five, they could not hold off Pine Lake. Richards led scorers with 24 points.
In their second game, the Eagles were eager to get back to the win column. Taking advantage of a balanced scoring attack, the Eagles managed to keep Maywood on their heels in the first half. Wilson was on fire from outside and inside, pouring in 10 points, Richards had five and Maegan Welcome had four in the first half. Snoqualmie accelerated the pace even further in the second half with all starters adding points to their scoreboard. Crabtree was dominating inside, pumping in nine points, Richards finished with 12, Daionda Davis popped in a three from long range adding to her nine-point total, Welcome tickled the net from outside ending with 11 and Rachel Nyberg controlled the boards and rounded out the scoring with another two to finish with the win 55-35.
Hawks blast Issaquah
The Chief Kanim Middle School eighth-grade varsity girls’ basketball team defeated a visiting Issaquah team 45-31 last week. The Hawks came out firing as they hit a string of baskets in the first quarter. Chief Kanim’s defense and rebounding proved to be too much for Issaquah. Madison Yakabowski finished with 25 points, 17 rebounds and eight steals. Vica Falcon had five points and five rebounds while Miranda Pratt had six points and eight rebounds. Cassidy Will had two steals, Nikki Stantion had four points and eight rebounds, Hannah Gogan had a point and six rebounds, Jessica Paladhini had four rebounds, MacKenzie Peerboom had three rebounds, Wendy Hecker had two points and two steals and Caylene Castagno had two points and four rebounds.
Chief Kanim drops a game
The Chief Kanim Middle School Hawks’ seventh-grade varsity basketball team lost a hard fought battle against a visiting Issaquah team 12-24. The Hawks worked extremely hard and played great team defense. Despite playing without Brielle Buhner due to injury, the Hawks’ demonstrated a never- give-up attitude. Brie Busby led the scoring with 10 points while Alyssa McClaukin had three rebounds and two steals.
MacKenzie Curley added two rebounds while Grace Washam, Brittany Blair and Abbey Peterson all played great defense. Shauna Reed also added four rebounds while teammate MacKenzie Will had two points and six rebounds. Finally, Jessareh Helm had two assists.
Grapplers blast Beaver Lake
Last week the Hawks’ varsity wrestling team took it to the Beaver Lake Bulldogs, winning by a final score of 60-25. The matmen wrestled like a squadron of brave soldiers winning 8-of-10 total matches. All 10 victories for the team came by way of pin.
Ben Larson, Ryan Makela, Stuart Hallock, Matt Vanourek, Vince Vasquez and RW Johnston remained undefeated, each winning by pin. Connor Hollis and Frank Tassara also pinned their opponents in the match. Darrell Kinsman, wrestling up a weight class, performed excellently, but could not hold off a heavier opponent. Andrew Sypher and Mark Stetson also performed extremely well. Drew Handy and Lee Amador contributed to the team score winning by forfeit. The team’s performance greatly impressed coaches from both teams. The Hawks are clearly working extremely hard to be the best they can be.
The onslaught from Chief Kanim didn’t stop at the varsity match. JV and sixth-grade wrestlers dished out a good thumping as well. David Johnston and Dan Peterson started off the action winning with pins. The Hawks continued to shine with wins from Chris Hindmarch, Royce Clark, Sean Duvall, Zach Storm, Justin Williams, Justin Bridges and Jarret Adams. The matches of the evening came from Taylor Yotz and Taylor Hawes. Yotz wrestled like a seasoned veteran, pinning his opponent late in the match with a sweet half-nelson. Hawes pulled out a tie match against a heavier opponent. The wrestler sported a smooth head and arm counter, that was too tough for his larger opponent to handle. Alex Cary, Tino Paophavinh and Evan Prior also wrestled well for the Hawks.
